So am I right in thinking that counter balance does not help with cross bat shots ?. This whole bat weight vs muscle fatigue is worth looking into for someone researching in biomechanics.

I doubt it would make much difference. Considering you are extending your arms out anyway. I think that's where good pickup bats come into their own, higher middles etc. Heard a story about the Indian players getting bats with higher middles to deal with pitches in Aus. I assume this was because of bounce and the need to play cuts/pulls/hooks. I'm no expert but most of the pro's (apart from Gayle) bat weights are around 2'7-10 IIRC and they are seriously strong lads, bat speed is king I think.

I use a counter balance on my handle and it makes no difference on cross bat shots mate.

Is it just the weight and pick up or has it also to do with where the bat is held relative to where the center of Gravity/middle is?

For ex:  A higher middle with a high grip cause the same fatigue as a very low middle with a low grip ?

No idea but holding the bat lower down would move your hands closer to the balance point of the bat.

I also think having more wood in the spine as opposed to the edges might helps pickup. However, getting the weight right is the main consideration. If you can play all your shots with only your top hand it's a start. If you have shove your right hand in to hold the bat through the shot (maybe a little for cut/pull) it's not a good sign.

Yes I think its the weight that comes first. Pickup is quite relative to one's style of batting which ofcourse also depends on the no of grips, where you hold the bat etc etc.

But having said that if we look at Gilchrist he used to have a high grip and could play drive, cut & pull with ease...so there are exceptions to every rule I guess..

Gilly could of been using a light bat for all we know that allowed him to do that. Be interesting to know from our Aussie cousins what weight their first class players use.

Gilly used 2.8 to 2.9 which is pretty much what most use. Usually an oz here and there won't matter to them as long as the pick up is good.... Unless you are Michael Hussey of course and carry scales with you at all times

Watson bats at 2.10 and Ponting in his prime batted at 2.12. But most bat at 2.10 and under
