Got out to two left arm over bowlers this weekend. Does anyone have any tips for facing this demonic defects of nature and actually scoring runs?
Also lefties out there, what line/length do you try and hit, especially if you can see the batsmen has no idea how to score if its not short/full toss/ down leg?
And does anyone have any training tips that may help, I intend to have a fair few hours on the bowling machine this week working on this.

As a lefty myself i'd say try maybe opening up your stand a teeny bit....this works for me facing right handers and i see a lot of sucessful right handers do it against us lefties.
Were they swinging the ball? If it away swing i sometimes move a fair bit infront of the stumps knowing that anything pitching inline should miss and anything hitting may have pitched on leg unless very full. This becomes easier to work off your legs i find as well as moving yuorself nearer to the pitch if i wide line is taken by the bowler.
If inswing i find you have to wait for a bad ball, not found a sure fire way of playing this that i am comfortbale with, i usually look to get off strike by nicking a quick single, cant get out from the other end. But there are often a few tickles down the legside to be had off an inswinger.

As a bowler if you have no idea then we'd probably look to bowl straight, if you are a rh bowler and bowl to lefties its the same principle so have a think about that. The length, if bowling on a decent wicket, would probably be going through at around top of stumps. Its the same principles as normal bowling really mate, we arent so demonic that we've created new rules for our bowling

Its the same principle for lefties facing right arm over.

also i find as it takes getting used to dont over commit to a shot early especially early in the innings and if the ball is moving, you are wanting the bowlor to bowl straight really, as its probably easiest for you to play (except full toss,half volley etc balls)!

I prefer facing left-arm seamers! Definatly agree on opening your stance, think about it like this: the bowler is bowling at you from a totally different angle compared to a Right arm over so if your adopting the same stance, your going to be 'too' side on and would have to play the ball around your front leg... With regards to shot selection, judging movement etc its exactlly the same as for a right arm bowler, dont change your game because its a left arm bowler

If you're a right handed batsman facing a left arm over the wicket, then the umpire is always going to have an element of 'has it pitched outside leg' in the back of their mind. And in my limited experience of bowling I've never had an LBW. So you could think about using the 'flaw' in the laws to your advantage?

And the line I try to bowl is pushing the ball across the right hander trying to induce the nick

I bowl left arm medium pace and bat middle order. Here's what I do:-

Stand still with a slightly opened stance facing the bowler. For all lefties, keep your front foot playing down the line of leg stump. This firstly makes it nearly impossible to get caught lbw as the inswinger will drift down leg and the outswinger will be pitching outside leg. Secondly your bat becomes a second line of defense if the outswinger is bowled ie. the bat is guarding middle/off. This is a very simple way of negating a left arm over.

Other than that, I 'd say make a second late movement with the front foot depending on the how much the ball swings as it comes down - just to get you into line. Key is with all swing bowlers not to commit yourself to early.

Problems a left armer has:-

1. Inswinger not swinging and becoming a off side half volley
2. Inswinger starting to straight and heading down leg
3. Outswinger starting outside leg or being dragged down
4. Outswinger starting to wide and becoming a wide half volley/long hop

Use the angles to your advantage if you can see what the guy is trying to bowl.

Did this last week (dragged one down), got me a wicket. I called it my 'slow ball bouncer' in the bar afterwards

Cheers for the tips guys. I should have mentioned I do open my stance up to lefties, and if its seam I come further out of my crease.

uknsaunders, thanks, ill definatley attempt to put that into practice when i face a leftie next.

I have just returned from a bowling machine session with the machine set up "around the wicket" and i felt slightly better. The thing is with the ball coming on to the bat I don't struggle too much, but if there isnt much bounce and its slow of the pitch I find it incrediby hard to manouevre the ball

Sounds like this was more of a coincidence and that you just hadn't adjusted correctly to the change of angle.

Were you out in the same way or different ways?

I got out to a lefty yesterday

- Little contest which he won. Bowled it short to me and I hit him for 2 fours but I was late on one of them so I top edged it to the keeper. Lefties are annoying as you can sometimes get caught in 2 minds as to what to do with them..

But not the end of the world. I can now learn from that experience
