Does anyone else hate playing on artificial wickets?
« on: May 02, 2011, 07:44:43 AM »

Anyone?

Even if they play alright, yesterday the one we had was fine to bat and bowl on and had a bit of extra bounce for me being 6ft + which I dont normally get on grass pitches.

However, the state of the ball be the end is a joke! We use 1 ball for both innings and it is impossible to keep it in shape!

Also fielding in trainers in dangerous, I slipped several times yesterday and you have no grip when slowing down.

I am not a great an as fnd they are bouncier than turf pitches but sure it would be ok if played on every week just not so good if you are to play on turf pitches most of the time.

There's definitely a grass pitch in the main park in Amsterdam (Amstelpark?)....a very good one actually. Fond memories of that ground........good people, good level of cricket and the teas afterwards always had that little extra 'something'  :D

Not played on one for years as not allowed in our league but got a t20 on one in a few weeks against a forum member

But I agree they are crap and dangerous if the outfield is wet as you can't wear spikes

Not sure about the pitches in Rotterdam but I know the one mentioned by Pedals is grass that is the VRA club one but all the rest I know is artificial normaly laid over some sand base, so there isn't to much bounce so I am told, will have to see on Saturday how these wickets here go

I think it is more a case of what you are used to playing on, if you went from a slow low grass wicket to a fast and bouncy grass wicket the next day you might struggle.

I have played nearly all my cricket on artificial so I find it difficult going the other way, I first played a proper match on grass about 6 years ago and have only in the last 2 years had regular matches on grass wickets and at first I didn't enjoy it but I changed my approach on grass and last year I did begin to make decent runs on grass.

If you get an artificial pitch that has been installed properly then it isn't going to be as extreme as some of the old pitches with concrete bases.

I was getting quite a bit of seem movement yesterday, i guess it depends on the individual pitch. But I was slipping in the outfield and it was dry!
