My Newbery GT SPS Custom
« on: May 09, 2011, 04:48:17 PM »

Received this beauty, this morning from Mike (Talisman) to complete my kit for the season. I had been after a GT players for a while and all the used ones seemed to get snapped up very quickly so I PM'd Mike to see what he could do for me and after giving him my specs, he came up with this.

I asked for 2.10 dead weight finished (single chevron grip, stickers, scuff and toe guard), little or no concaving and with a good pick-up and then a spiral added over the chevron, standard thickness oval handle, GT profile with a mid middle and 9-12 grains either all sapwood or a small amount of heartwood on the outside edge for a RHB. Mike said it wouldn't be a problem and that he would be heading off to pick out some clefts in a few days and would choose mine then. The service from Mike was superb, he replied promptly to my emails and questions and despite me forgetting to give him my postal address  :-[ , when I did he posted the bat out to me the following day.

The bat is beautifully balanced with a very light pick-up around 2.7. A number of people comment on these and claim the middle is very high but which gives it the light pick-up but on this it is mid-placed and initial signs are that it is huge :D. Now on with the knocking in and I will add to this once that is done and I have had chance to use it. Thanks Mike  :D

Thanks, guys. Before someone asks, as I know someone will as there a few of you into your edge and spine heights - edges are 30mm approx and spine 60mm approx. Not the biggest edges, I know, but huge edges aren't that important to me.

Looks like a fair bit of concaving for a bat which was requested to have little or none, looks a nice bat though never the less.

It has a small amount of concaving which I am ok with. I think the angle of the pictures make it appear that it is heavily concaved which is not the case.

Very good bat indeed, lovely! I love it! The GT I once held and saw looked rubbish and I wanted to break it in the shop but this is something else!

Doesn't it look alot like your Paradox if I am not mistaken?

Thanks

It is similar in a lot of respects, the edge size and spine height are very similar although there is less concaving on the GT. The toe is thinner on the GT and it has a little more of a bow I think than the paradox but appearance wise it is quite close.

I'll put a profile comparison pic up in a minute

Did you ask for a Players and get a SPS instead within your budget?

Does look like its too good for a Players model to me.

No, I was given the option of a standard players GT for the budget I had in mind or an SPS custom for a bit more, so it was an easy decision to make.

Pardox LE on the left and GT SPS custom on the right.

The middle looks much higher on the GT but the sweet spots feel in a very similar position on both bats.

I heart that Redback...is the Paradox the favourite one then with most?

From what I have been reading it seems to be. I think Johan has one and he loves his, Jenko has one (or maybe 2!) I think as does tbarnfield plus myself plus others I have probably missed out. Everyone says they just go so well. I've only used mine in 2 games now and still has to really get going but all the signs are good!
