I don't think he has the best technique, but it certainly isn't bad. Purple patch over the last 2 years is the longest purple patch I've ever seen.

I think because Watson is a bit of a "mechanical" batsman his technique looks worse than it is. He, like Ponting does plant his front foot a little, but he is showing more than a purple patch, i think he works very hard at his game and cares a lot about his performance (which is why he gets out in the 90's a lot).

Yes he can look ungainly, yes he hits a great drive no, technically he is no Ian Bell, but he is consistent and that is good.

Took the words out of my mouth Langer.. Long bloody purple patch.. Bit of a slow start to his career in his first 8 tests from 2005 to 2008 but then after that very consistant indeed

lol might have been a bit hasty in saying hes on a purple patch, but i truly dont think hes been properly tested yet. the technique imo is flawed, but he is doing very well with it so i guess i cant criticize ;p

very much agree with your comments buzz about the mechanics and maybe that was my point he is a very coached batsman but what intregues me with him his natural ability in one day cricket.

He looks like a batsman who is fighting his natural urges when at the crease in test cricket.

And it is the mechanics i was on about by the coaching points.

No doubt i'm sure bumble mentioned it about the hours he must have done to make his cover/straight drive what it is..

Ref he has not been tested did do Pakistan and England not have a decent bowling attack i think they tested him all winter and he did ok.

Prior is a funny one he bats well in in the longer form but looks like a shorter form type of batter but in the shorter form can not do it.

I'm not Keieswetter biggest fan but on his form nobody can denie him a shot and i would give him a few not just a couple.

Glad somebody mentioned Jayawardene and Sangakkara! :)

The great thing in hitting is, not to be half-hearted about it; but when you make up your mind to hit, to do it as if the whole match depended upon that particular stroke.

On Watson.

AS someone said he is very mechanical, like alot of the Aussies (Clarke in particular). His first movement is to step forward. Which tells me to be honest he probably doesnt pick the ball up as well as a lot of world class batsman. He steps forward and just punches the ball hard. When he hits his drives well its as good as any batsman in the world.

But his technique is not perfect. Because of that forward movement he cuts and pulls off the front foot which is a bit unorthodox and you will notice in particular alot of hits cuts just fly through point to gully a fair little uncontrolled.

I think Ian Bell is delight to watch. Very light on his feet, clean striker, all the shots ... pretty textbook.

Kallis must be the most technically sound batsmen there is.

Mind you, on a crumbling wicket at Edgbaston, Yousuf was pure class.

I haven't seen Tendulkar bat in real life yet - just a short wait until August.
