Adjusting your grip of the bat - Video Added
« on: May 13, 2011, 08:32:43 AM »

Hiya,

I bought a new pair of Puma Iridiums 3000 pads and they are brilliant. The only problem im having is that I have to adjust my grip so as not to scrape the bat on the pad and it really affected my game in the nets. Anyone else facing the same problem?

how are you holding the bat?
seems odd that pads would make you need to change your grip.

The proper way. Maybe its just my stance or maybe the pads are just stiff becuase the habvent been properly worn in.

Ok - assuming you agree with me that the proper way to hold the bat is like this:

then then next thought is that you are perhaps "tucking your hands in" a little too much. What I mean by this is that your hands are too close to your waist and not allowing you room to keep your diamond shape with your front and back elbows and "rock the baby".

I may be totally wrong, the problem is that without seeing you I can't give you an obvious simple tip. My view is that as pads are relatively standard, it is more likely your setup that could be a little out. But other than your hands, it could be your back, your stance could be too open or closed... I am not really sure.

If you can get some pics up or a vid up then it might be easier....

It appears your bottom hand grip is too tight, you need the squash ball treatment ;)

Adam Gilchrist stuck a squashball in his left glove (your right, bottom hand) to stop him gripping the bat too tight with the bottom hand, as you're doing here.

a lot of players only hold the bat in the fingers of the bottom hand, helps no end for hitting straight, letting your top hand control the shot. because of the way the human body is built, the lead arm can form a much straighter arc than the back arm when stood side on ready to face a delivery, try building some top hand only drills in to your practice and feel the top hand play the stroke, its difficult because as a right handed batsman people are generally right hand dominant and so their bottom hands come in naturally, fight the urge, practice hard and smash it straight!

your grip is ok, perhaps a little bottom handed but not a big deal.
you should stop pushing your hands into your left thigh behind the pad. try a slightly more relaxed slightly more upright stance and you won't have the issue.
try to set yourself up more like sachin.

Your stance looks fine as a lot of coaches nowadays will have you in a position as if you were seated on a bar stool with your hands close to your waist. But it is a question if it works for you well thats fine
