Broken Handle
« on: May 23, 2011, 09:32:38 PM »

Evening gents,
Long time no see!
Basically, as the more alert of you might have noticed, I've broken the handle on my Newbery Thruxton Players. I bought it off Pinchhitter about 15 months ago and have PMed him asking whether or not he still has the proof of purchase from Hove.
If he does I'm guessing it'd be ok to send it of to Newbery themselves?
I've already sent them an email enquiring about what they can do for me.
What I want to know from you fine people is what I can do if Newbery can't sort it?
What are the alternatives?
Would any of our talented bat-maker come forum-members be able to replace the handle?
Is it worth getting it replaced? And finally, how much can I expect it to cost?

The damage is pretty terrible, basically I nailed a cut and the handle separated all the way around. We're not just talking about a crack but a complete separation and as far as I can see the only thing keeping it from falling off is the twining and the rubber absorbers running through the middle.
Will try get pictures tomorrow.

Cheers.

Souldn't cost any more than £30. If it does, find someone else to do it.

Newbery will sort it. The bat has a stamp on the shoulder telling Newbery when it was made. They'll charge you, but that is only to be expected.

Cheers people :)
Do you know of they'll give me a price before I send it? Or how much it will roughly cost to send it?
Have never posted a bat before..

No damage to the blade and easily reparable at least. Do you always keep the grip rolled right down to the shoulders of the bat, I've found handles break alot more easily when you don't.

Yeah I do. I had been meaning to regrip it for a while but I'd taped it like crazy to keep the grip down.
Tape came off on Saturday though (I didn't bat) and I was going to regrip it this week. Netted with it on Monday and the grip started to ride back up, at the time the crack was right at the end of the grip but I pulled it up further to get better photos.

So in short, Monday was the first time I batted with part of the handle exposed.

Fair enough, seems unlikely that it would break so throughly in one go, though you never know. Most of mines have gone gradually.

Are you asking for advice about getting it repaired or suggesting the bat is faulty?

In both cases you will have to send the bat back to Newbery, so when you do, just mention it hadn't been used much and see if it comes under a warranty.

Well I wasn't sure what I could do at all. I wasn't even sure if such damage could be repaired or replaced!

Have since been told to phone up Newbery and request a repair/replacement.
If they refuse then I'll consider sending it to Mat at Hell4leather and having him replace it.
I'm guessing there must have been some fault for a crack of that severity though. I was facing a school standard medium pacer when it happened.

Handles, like blades, are made of natural materials and you may have just been unlucky. It isn't a manufacturing fault to be honest. It happens, as annoying as it may seem. Not Newbery's fault, no way to tell the handle was weak.

It is very repairable, and it will be interesting to see what they say. Let us know.

Did you get a price from Newbery for a rehandle? As the handle on my GT335 had broke and wondered how much it's going to cost.
