I'll quicky do my best here.

This is the minimum you can get away with.

A vice
Drawknife
Spokeshave/travisher depending on what profile you fancy doing
smoothing plane
rasp file for shaping the handle
A power sander

It can be quite an expensive hobby, i thought that when i started, i'll have to sell 50 bats before i cover all costs!

Right cheers mate. Where did you buy your tools from and also where is the best place to buy part made clefts (all grades inc kasmir) just with handles partly in.

I have a part made kashmir cleft but the best place to buy clefts from is probably Fusion.

From Fusion:

Level 1 -    Superbest £70.98
                Grade 1 £65.44

Level 2 -    Superbest £77.98
                Grade 1 £72.44

Level 3 -    Superbest £87.98
                Grade 1 - £82.44

Dont know the prices but I think you can get kashmir clefts from CJI cricket

Cheers Changy, can you please explain to me that levels cheers mate!

Level 1 - The cleft will be handled and pressed

Level 2 - The cleft will be handled and pressed with the shoulders and toe cut in

Level 3 - The cleft will be handled and pressed with the shoulders and toe cut in with initial shaping of the toe and shoulders of the bat.

Don't quote me on that but think thats about right.  Tom will probably be able to confirm this

That sounds about right, if it's your first DIY bat I think it's best to go for the Level 3 option

I'd definitely go for a level 2 or 3, depends on how confident and capable you are.

hi guys ,
i can supply part-mades if any one is interested? i find that the best place to get tools from are boot fairs, markets ebay etc .the older tools like drawknifes, planes etc are made from better steel, and tend to sharpen up better ... i mainly use a old stanleys(bailey) 4 1/2 down to a no 3. the modern handplanes have plastic handles and just dont feel the same.... i find ebay a great place to get your tools from. a decent  vice is a must aswell ,its worth spending  a bit more on decent tools ,the results will be better and will last you a lifetime   :)

regards
matt

Danny would like to add...

- Good vice [Mech engineering] with cushioning for vice jaws
- A good solid work bench to work on
- Drawknife [8 inch blade - I use English style]
- Sandpaper various grades
- Travisher [No5 good all purpose one most say] or Convex spokeshave [e.g. Clifton]
- Sharpening stone/ files for the tools
- [Rasp] or Subform for handle
- Twine for handle
- Glue
- Pure Beeswax for buffing if you feel the urge...

Old tools are better as Matt says due to the steel make sure you have enough steel to sharpen though....

Geting a shoulder and toe bat means you elminate the need for a bandsaw / jig saw or even dare I say a sander....

Gary at Redback also has handled and pressed bats - shouldered toe'd etc
