Hello,

I currently have my vice set up like this:



I was thinking the other day, while I was shaping up a bat, that it would be much easier if I turned the vice 90 degrees so that the bat when in it stuck out from the bench.

Every photo I've seen has the vice set up like I have it, why does no one have it sticking out of the bench? Thoughts?

i think i remember seeing Nixon bats using one which twisted so you could angle it out a bit. i guess if you turned it around you wouldnt have any support and instead of forcing the bench sideways along the length you would be forcing it towards you. may cause it to fall over or pull it out of the wall if attached

I think if you had it so the bat pointed straight out of the bench you wouldn't be able to turn the handle of the vice properly as it would hit the work surface.

The vice handle bar slides in the screw to allow you to.

I know it slides along, but if it was set up like that then you would have to slide it along every half turn which isn't really worth it hence why I said you wouldn't be able to turn it "properly"

Good call on the handle, hadn't thought of that, could be done I guess but a bit of a pain!!! 

I have seen the vices with the twisting bottoms, I guess thats the answer, but a bit beyond my means ATM.

Thanks for the thoughts guys - I think I'll leave it as it is for now.
