left arm over, swnging in to right hand bat
« on: June 08, 2011, 10:12:31 AM »

currently having nightmares about this after being bowled and lbw twice in 3 knocks by a left arm over bowler swinging it in to me as a rh bat. Its something ive not really practiced and its difficult to find left armers to net with. Any lifelines out there for me? I can feel my head falling over following the original line of the ball which is hard to avoid.

If you open up your stance so your facing where the ball is coming from that would be where to start from. [If your not already doing so of course.]

open up the stance slightly. stand tall and play straight. by opening up your no longer trying to play around the front pad. i used to have a tendancy to try and whip it through midwicket. balance was rubbish so head went to off.

if you have any right arm inswing bowlers get them to go round the wicket at nets. well if possible through where the stumps would be so it gives a similar line. not perfect but you have to work with what you have

Pure kryptonite for me I have had an absolute mare with this for two seasons now and just for good measure Im struggling with the Left armed outswinger now to boot!

The most annoying thing is that most of it is in my head as I never used to be bothered by a leftie!

Peplow asked a similar question ages ago - but from a left handed perspective - this was the thread, but the advice is the similar to a right handed batsman... when i say "close your stance a bit" I meant straighten yourself up as peplow said he had opened his stance up.

I bowl left arm over, so perhaps I can give you so decent advice! Like others have said I bat with an open stance facing the bowler. I make a small initial movement with my front foot on the line of leg stump. This "defines" the line the ball must travel down to get you lbw ie. if it hits your front foot from this position, it's 99% certain to be missing leg or pitching outside leg.

Now from this position any decent left arm over will be bowling it further towards off stick. Like with all swing bowling, watch the swing and play it late. Wait for it to swing back before playing. If it's further towards/outside off, then make another late front foot movement to get inline.

I agree wholly with the people suggesting to open up the stance. Also I would recommend delaying putting your foot forward slightly, and when you do try and put it a bit more towards the umpire so you don't overbalance and always have your head over the ball.
