Bowling injuries + bowling run up
« on: June 12, 2011, 11:28:56 PM »

I've bowled a fair few overs since I've come back from my ankle injury and after each game I've played in my lower back has been hurting me a fair bit.

I guess there is something in my action which is straining my lower back, but does anyone know what would cause discomfort in my back? Would it be that I am trying to bowl too hard in my action rather than using the momentum gained from the run up? I supposed a good way of looking at this, was to video myself bowling and then I can see what I am doing when I bowl?

I am not happy with my run up at the moment as I do not seem to have a set run up at the moment as every time I run into bowl it's completely different and sometimes I have to do a little jig in my run up for it to feel right, but then I lose the momentum. Whats the best way of sorting out your run up?

I'm not much help regards to a solution, but when I bowl seam up I have the same problem. My lower back isn't in pain as such, but aches for the next couple of days. Note to self. Stick to spin!

First thing you need is some bowling coaching. This kind of pain is often indicative of an issue where you are bowling half way between front and side on, and it hurts because you get a weird twisting action in your lower back. If you didn't have it prior to your ankle injury then you have probably subtly changed your action due to this.

Tim is right, it may be you have a mixture between front on and side on. I had the same problem, I went to my coach and he helped me fix my action and no more pain! I'm sure if you video yourself many people could comment on what maybe is the issue.

Had the problem myself when I tried to bowl to fast. Remodelled into side on, and it went away!

That will help too, but the issue is that in the twisting if you get caught between two positions, you also cause problems with your spine that you need to avoid. adding strength to the lower back alone doesn't solve this problem.

I had a severe back problem about 6 years ago. It started of like this and i ignored it, ended up with my 4th and 5th vertebrae closing up slightly and being bedridden for 5 months.
With the help physio and a bowling coach to tweek my action i havent had alot of problems.
Was told the main causes of this were; being overweight(fatty) so lost a fair bit, bowling conditions and a poor core.
I continued to do some core exercises and this has helped soooo much.

I'd suggest the feedback in here is "Go and see a physio and a bowling coach". That's got to be the right thing to do. you really don't want to make it any worse than it already is, and if that means stop playing for a couple of weeks or even months, please heed our advice and stop!

(A very well qualified bowling coach) as level 1-2.5 shouldn't get involved with things like that.

Well I am booked in for a 1-to-1 session with Simon Price at Worcs Cricket Centre, so I'll be able to view my action is slow mo and see what's going on with it.
