A big hello and opinion on new bat.
« on: June 14, 2011, 06:09:10 PM »

Hi Guys and hello, been trauling through this great site trying to find an answer to my possible problem but have decided to to jump aboard and ask you guys for your opinion on a recent bat i purchased.
Bought a gunn and moore 808 icon dxm off ebay the other day and when it arrived i niticed it had 10 reasonably straight grains but has 3 big stains on the face and 1 right on the sweet spot,  im not sure if they are butterfly stains or not... I cant manage to upload pic to show you, my question is the 808 model should be grade 2 willow, would grade 2 have these stains or have i been had??

many thanks in advance

Welcome and congrats for signing up (unlike a few i bet)
If the bat feels good, it pings like a gooden and got it at a price you think is good then who cares about the price.

I am sure there will be a person willing to upload the pic for you.

email pics to jonpinson at gmail dot com and I will stick them up, but stains don't necessarily mean the bat will be bad, indeed quite the opposite can be the case.

thanks for the replys and the confirmation that the marks are indeed butterfly stains. Im sure iv heard somewhere that some pros favoured a bat with these stains on them, how true that is i have no idea!

People who know more about willow than I ever will say there is truth to the story of butterfly stains increasing performance and longevity. Ugly they may be, but if the bat works...

It looks a beauty mate. Even better if you're a right hander with the ?wood on the outside edge. People here will tell you that that is good as well lol :)

These are not butterfly stains, these are graping from the growth of branches, these are harder and in the wrong place can restrict performance but they are not bad and certainly would expect to have been a fairly graded grade 2 bat. Butterfly stain is rare, it also is stain and does not move the grains like this growth.

My first Funky Slug had a similar blemish,  bang in the middle, was the best part of the bat!
Then the handle came out on a evening league game, got a new one and the same thing has happened! My bad luck!
Looking around the site for a new one now...
