I always find I can get a longer, harder, flatter throw in if I chase the ball, pickup with my back to the target, turn and throw.  If it comes straight to me, I find my throw is godawful weak!

I'm sure someone may be better able to advise, but that would seem to me like when turning you are using your core and shoulders rather than just arm?

It's something I struggle with, but I'm 99% certain strength doesn't come into it. Anyone should be able to throw the ball 50ish yards, obviously having better strength enables you to throw further than that.
It's all about the technique, using the flick of your wrist, not your arm to throw the ball. Just trying to push the ball through the air with only your shoulder and arm is incorrect and will have poor results.
Using your wrist like in baseball gets much more speed into the ball, kinda like a catapult, as opposed to some other metaphor I can't come up with right now.
