Hi, I've been reading the forum for a while and thought it was time I got stuck in. Not sure if this is the right area of the forum so please move it if need be.

I was boring the arboriculturalist at work talking about bats. There was some logic, he's interested in trees, bats come from trees, he must like bats. Plus I really want him to plant some Willow. 

He wanted to know why bats are made from Willow as in his opinion the structure and properties of Poplar are almost identical.

A question I could not answer! I was hoping someone with more knowledge would be able to shed some light on the matter.

Something to do with willow being the best combination of low weight and good rebound. I don't think any other wood has such a good combination of those things.

They don't last as long though, plus that's mainly because of the amount of weight that is low down on a baseball bat.

Ash is way to heavy for cricket bats.

i'm sure hundreds of tests have been done to ensure that willow is the best wood to use for cricket bats
