Topic: Toss dilema ahead of a big game. (Read 2748 times)

Basically this sunday we've got whats essentially a season make or break for us, win and we go second with some easier games to come, lose and we're relying on teams above us messing up to get promoted.

Unfortunately out three best batters are all unavailable, however on the plus side we've got our strongest attack out for the first time this season.

Bearing in mind the games 30 overs an innings and to be played on a flat high scoring astro, with small boundries (Par score maybe 220), what do you guys recon we'd be best to do if we win the toss.

a) Bat first and hope we scrape together enough to put them under pressure chasing
Or
b) Bowl and back ourselves to to limit them to something chasable.

Obviously none of you know the teams concerned etc, but I'm interested in what people thing.

Back your strongest suit we tend to bat first in t20 but bowl first in league cricket as we have a bowling attack that can restrict batsmen but struggle to take wickets at times

I think the main reason it matters is mental, leads of people I've played with in the past have issues with chasing.

I'm inclined to back the bowlers as they'll not know we're a bit light on batting and will look for a par score, whereas if we bat we could get skittled and then it only needs one lad to have a bit of a tonk and we're done.

bowl first. Batting is easier for inexperienced players if they know what they need to chase. Bat first and you risk uncertainty and panic

Trust your gut instinct. See what the attitude / morale is like on the day within the team. Are the bowlers hyped up and ready to go? Are the batters skulking around looking fidgety and nervous? All you can do is captain the team to the best of your ability and try and get the best out of everyone.

I agree with the majority for bowling first if that's your strength.. restrict or skittle them out as quick as possible.., then make sure you got the right balance of batting pairs i.e. slogger and steady to get the runs you need...make sure you've got batting at least to 5 or 6 if possible even with best 3 batters unavailable and lastly keep an eye on the run rate and try to stay with it or slightly above to win the game.... good luck and let us know how you get on...

I would absolutely be batting first. that way you know what you are defending and the oppo will have the score board pressure.
if you are weak batting there is much less pressure batting first and even if you get bowled out for 150 they still have to get them.
seriously I wouldn't dream of doing anything else.

We always try to bowl first, restrict the opposition to below 100 from 30, and then below 200 from 50. If you apply enough pressure and set fairly defensive fields so the batsman can't score boundaries, they will get themselves out.

Have to agree with buzz. Scoreboard pressure makes people do funny things, and if your batting is that poor anyway, chasing, even after restricting them is going to be incredibly hard.
