Concaving! What does it mean?
« on: August 01, 2011, 03:09:11 PM »

hi, i'm new to the forum and i keep coming across this adjective. pardon my ignorance but i was just wondering if some of you enlightened chaps could explain to me what concaving on a bat is all about.

Im not really after whether its good or bad just a explanation as i couldn't find a answer on here.

Is it is how the profile of the bat gently curves, or am i totally wrong? ???

thanks

Why's it called scalloping, I always thought that was decorations carved in a scallop shape?

no the bow of the bat is the curvature to its face from toe to handle, concaving is how much or a curve there is on the back of the bat the more concaved it is the lighter it will be as a general rule as more wood has been removed from it.

Not sure, pretty sure most batmakers refer to it as scalloping but the term concaving seems to have been favoured on the forums!

Does anybody know what the advantages of concaving are?

Because personally I cannot really see the benefit of having it.

Concaving = Reduction of weight whilst keeping edge and spine size intact.
