Best Custom Brand?
« on: January 29, 2009, 07:03:08 AM »

I was Just wondering what the best custom brand is, or some of the best ones.

I know this is probably a common thread so excuse the ignorance.

Forget price...from what people have seen/used or know of, what is the best custom made bats?

You will get a quality bat no matter where you go with custom.

Julian is a great maker but he does not have his own willow or access to the best in England so no matter what he does the bat is limited by willow choice. I would go for Newbery or Warsop for now.

seen loads of custom made bats as for using them I would recommend both of these guys....

James Laver from Laver and Wood makes a cracking bat and so does Tim Keeley at Newbery

I have had custom bats made from Newbery, Warsop, Screaming Cat, Fusion and BAS.

MY best bats were Screaming Cat, Newbery, BAS and Warsop. Fusion are no way near to any of these companies as they make only one shape.

From the price point of view I would rate the companies as follows - WARSOP, Newbery and SC (as you pay a hell lot on postage and customs)

From Craftsmanship point - SC and NB are top of the table followed by Warsop

By my experience from price to quality/performance, I would rate as follows - BAS, SC & NB and Warsop.

Yes, BAS is not a custom bat maker but I have access to them and get some very good bats made from the top quality willow.

Newbery and Warsop have an edge over SC and BAS as they are based in the UK and get access to the best willow / personally select the willow. However, the willow on my SC and BAS was in no way inferior to those on the Warsop and NB.

I would put (in fact have put) my money on NB, (BAS) SC and Warsop.

has anyone heard / dealt with Warrior in West Yorkshire.

Their website reads -"Warrior cricket have been making and selling the Warrior brand of English Willow cricket bats in England for over 20 years. Every bat is individually hand crafted to ensure a top quality product using traditional methods which are over a century old.

The crafts men at Warrior have over 80 years experience manufacturing bespoke cricket bats to suit the individual and unique needs of each cricket player."

Only thing I know about them is that I think their bats sell for around £130 on their website but if you go on ebay quite often they put bats on there and they sell for around £50 so worth a look

Yash, my local sports shop in York normally have a few Warriors in, they look fairly decent bats however I do not like the anti scuff they sometimes put on their bats as you cannot see the grains on them really. Obviously if you went direct to them you could choose not to have that on. They also have a brand called IF (Ian and Fred, there is not a website for them though) I believe that they are the two people who make the bats for Warrior. The sports shop also have a couple of them in and they do look very nice bats and got a fair price tag too! The person who owns the shop in York seems to rate them highly.

Warrior, made by Richard Wensley, some odd but good shapes, great value for money if you get what you want.

Could someone tell me how Redback Cricket go in comparison to this?
Im just going off pictures and they looked quality, as opposed o Warsop i wasnt as impressed with. I know theres more to bat than pictures but just an observation.

Sorry to bring up an old topic but....

Apparently Richard Wensley does not make bats for Warrior anymore, stopped a little while back now and has also been ill now for a few years. The Warrior bats are now made by two people Ian and Fred, cannot remember the second names but are the people who make IF bats. They bought out Warrior but decided to keep making their bats along side their IF's. Apparently they worked with Richard at slazenger so knew him through that.
