Batting tips?
« on: August 05, 2011, 07:12:46 PM »

I saw the good post on concentration when batting and something particularly helpful on there was just to simply watch the ball closely all the way during the bowlers run up through to playing the shot. Made me think that I probably don't actually watch the ball closely enough until it's left the bowlers hand.

Bearing in mind I used to bat 9/10/11 when I was younger and stopped playing aged 21 for 10 years until I took it up again last year I suspect there are lots of faults with my technique.

Now that I play midweek cricket to a lower standard I have managed to score some runs including my maiden 50 (and a couple more) last year. This year hasnt been as good with 46 as my top score. I suspect that I do play too much cross line and maybe don't always come down straight as I often end up with the bat feeling as though it's twisted to mid on even when trying to play a straight or off drive.

Sorry for the long details but does anyone have any easy tips that would help me or any other poorer batsmen trying to improve. Watching the ball closely is good and I seem to remember being told to keep my left elbow high when I was younger, any other tips that may help?

Thanks in advance.

Hit the ball straight! Get a big stride in, be Confident (especially down the order, if you believe you can clear the ropes, you will!)

just make sure you show the makers name. i find hitting straight one of the easiest shots to play. just stay compact and play with the full blade.

Simplest thing I can think of that will help you pick your bat up straight is to ensure that in your stance with your bat up make sure the back of your right glove (if your a right hander) is near as dammit touching your back thigh/waist. Also ensure your left elbow is pointed down the pitch. Sounds daft but my coach told me to do it and just this little pointer made me play a lot straighter...

Best idea is to spend an hour in the nets with a coach. Whatever your level you will benefit massively from it......

Thanks all for your replies, the last one about ensuring a straight pick up sound like it may help me a lot.

I'll try it out next week and will let you know how I get on.

Cheers
