In need of some patience
« on: August 06, 2011, 07:31:36 PM »

Right boys, i am seriously in need of a miracle, failing that, some sound advice might do.

Went into bat today and we needed 60 off of 30 overs. First ball I played to point, no run, no problem. Second ball, short, rocked back, pulled for four, lovely. Third ball in exactly the same place, same shot, fielder had moved (which I had noticed), holed out at long on. Completely brain dead batting! I need to learn to play the situation not try to hit every ball for 4 or 6. Does anybody have any ideas of how I could teach myself patience?

At the moment I am in a bad slump of form, but I am seriously thinking about jacking it all in!

don't give up.
I've scored 29 runs in my last 4 knocks including 3 ducks. you can't be doing as bad as me!
I really need one of my new bats to arrive!
there are a few topics on here about concentration, but having a respect for the bowler really helps, even if they are rubbish.
typically good physical fitness helps concentration.
finally getting into a routine is frequently mentioned and that is really important.

in cricket, batting especially, the harder you practice the better you get. but don't just practice what you are good at.

I think a lot of it is due to having no confidence in my bat. I don't want to sound like I'm blaming my tools (bad workman and all), but I really don't think the bat is right for me. I scored 22, 19, 16, and 33 in my last 4 innings with a SH, have tried using my new M&H LHLB and have scored 2, 4, and 2. Can't work out if it's the bat or me though, so am going to go back to an SH tomorrow and if I score some runs, I am selling it lol.

you need to give the bat more time, you are having to retrain your batting technique with the new bat. that will take a while, like about 30+ hours of practice and playing time, not a few net sessions and a couple of games.

I reckon it is the bat indirectly. You are worrying, unconsciously, about the fact that you aren't used to it, and that is affecting your play. This suggests a deeper routed mistrust of your ability, manifested in the bat.

Ok, I've had a couple of drinks. I may be talking bollox.

Stick with it mate. I've had a similar struggle, but mine's bowling-related. I've had 9 caught+bowled opportunities. I've dropped all 9. I dunno if it's me, confidence, or what. I've held almost every outfield one, but off my own bowling I go to pieces!

33 in your last 4 innings? I would love to be scoring anywhere near that at the moment, I have scored 32 runs in my last 10 innings... Including an impressive 3 ducks and no score in double figures.. I have the same problem as the topic starter, I try to be positive and hit boundaries, I struggle and often get out quickly so try to swing at the ball harder, causing me to get out more.

My problem seems to be not waiting to get my eye in, I'm pre-empting shots so often I'm trying a ridiculous shot to a good ball and getting out... If you get a chance to bat just don't hit anything that isn't going onto your stumps, get your eye in then things should start working, I am always coming in and being told to slog so I can't take my own advice but I hope it helps you anyway.

I thought that might be the case. There's no way I'm going to get 30 hours of practice in with a 10 minute net and a short innings every week. Think I will probably go back to an sh as that is what I know and see how that goes for a few weeks, see if its bad form or what then make a decision about keeping or selling my bat.
