Patella Realignment / Lateral Release
« on: August 17, 2011, 03:07:25 PM »

Been having knee pain for a couple of years and have finally after physio etc decided to go for surgery as thats what the specialist has recomended.  My knee cap does not sit where it should do instead it sits to the right and does not track correctly so the surgery is to put it back where it should be hopefully!  Not entirely sure what has caused it, I did land badly on my knee years ago playing rugby and stupidly carried on as our sub prop had already been used.  I get really bad pain if my knee is bent for to long, if I squat or walk up and down stairs.  Standing is not so bad but after a days cricket I am struggling for days afters even with strong pain killers.

From what I understand I will be having a lateral release done so I was wondering has anyone else had it done and how was it?  What sort of time period did you have of work and how long till you were back to playing cricket etc?

Sorry for the waffle!!

Cheers

I've had 2 operations on the same knee, and it took about 15 months max for rehab. I did'nt have a lateral release, but I did have complete reconstructions to correct all the angles

Ul be looking at 9 months Physio if it's anything to go on what I had....but that was knee reconstruction due to ruptured Acl/cartilage etc. Was prob a yr before getting back into any sport tho

Not one to rush back from until your ready but will be worth it once it's all sorted out. Crutches will become your friend!!!

Cheers guys, yours both sound more serious than this. I have been reading online (never a good thing!) about people's experiences and they vary so much from people walking unaided on day 1 and back to work in days to others struggling to walk after 6 weeks.

Also dunno how much time I'm gonna need offa work, but fingers crossed it will be done in Sep/Oct and that I'll be very mobile for when the end of Jan when my wife is expected to drop our first. But more importantly be ready for April!

Yeah everyone is different mate as it depends hwo your body reacts to it, 1st knee i had done wasnt gr8 as they stuck me in plaster for 6 weeks which meant i lost alot of muscle mass due to not using my quad etc....nowadays they tend to be leaning towards keeping it moving so that you recover quicker

I found it takes complete dedication to the cause, Exercising and stretching, and like Tom said, whatever you do don't rush things. I was allowed to weight bear from the outset, but was in a splint (in various forms) for upwards of 12 weeks.

Sounds like a fun road ahead, least I cam get the worst of it out of the way before the baby makes an appearance. Might hold off buying a new bat until I know when I'm gonna be back playing, least it'll save me a few quid
