A Question for my Aussie friends -
« on: September 02, 2011, 10:19:22 AM »

Hi!

While browsing websites of some Aus based cricket retailers I have come across several bats in "Small Mens" size. What is this size? IS it like a GM Academy size?

The bats are listed as  - SH, SM, Harrow.

I inquired about this  and got the following reply from Meulemans was "the difference between SM and SH is a shorter handle in SM". But this does not make sense. A SH Custom XXX is A$700 whereas a Custom SM is A$300. Surely, the handle would not cost that much!!

Would appreciate if any of our Aussie forum members can shed some light on this.

This size is between Harrow and SH.
There is maybe an inch difference between the two.
Maybe get a SM then get it rehandled with a longer one?

Hi mate,

I had a Grays Millenium small mens a few years back, purely for the price difference.

Its exactly how you've described it, the blade width and length was the same as a SH bat I had at the time. The handle was on the thinner side though and needed an extra grip.

Hope this helps

Thanks guys.

This suddenly makes Aussie bats cheaper for me as I am 174cms, so a SM should be the one for me.

But again, the pricing beats any logic - A$300 price difference for a bat with the same blade length and width as a SH but a 10-12mm shorter handle.

IF the above is true, then I am not complaining. Pay extra $20-30 for a new spare set of stickers and get the bat rehandled in the UK. So for A$400-$450 (depending on the customs charge) you have a $750 bat!!!

The width of the blade is different:

SM - 10.5cm
SH - 11cm

The Length of the blade is also different:

SM - 84cm
SH - 86cm

So they are a bit different, but they are also much, much cheaper. Those sizes are from the GCCC catalogue and it says that the SM is for heights 1.68m -1.75m, so that is right in your height range.

GM Academy size is slightly smaller in length and width to a SH. I believe there is a thread in the GM forum on the subject.

Considering the width can be no more than 10.8cm I don't think this is totally correct Langer17

I know, the catalogue has just rounded up so they could save some ink.

My 2012 kit is sure to have a few Aussie bats now......

Any suggestions from my Aussie friends who may have seen some of the bats in person.

I am definitely keen on:
e41 Custom
XXX VI Custom
Bradbury X Players Custom

Pretty much, but I'd imagine it's more the length difference of 2cm but that's nothing if you're a little bit shorter. Wish I wasn't 6ft1, then my bats would be sooo much cheaper!

I replied to your PM Yash and the I've seen both the e41 players/1000 le and the XXX VI custom and both were very nice. I would say the XXX VI was the nicer bat though IMO.

I haven't seen the Bradbury X players as they are only sold by Meulemans as Bradbury cricket is in WA, but I'd imagine they would be very nice.

The Kinsgrove sizing chart states them as 1/2" shorter (1.25cm) which isnt much at all
