Lekka Challenge
« on: September 07, 2011, 04:08:18 PM »

I read the locked thread earlier and thought most of the comments were missing the point. If James can make a bat from Canadian Willow with the help of his batmaker in Thailand, then lets see it.

Happy to pay postage and test the bat in the name of research.

This was in reference to a Grey Nicholls bat - something which was denied on here by the bigginge - otherwise known as Alex, the UK Head batmaker for GN.

With the cold winters in Canada, would you able to successfully grow the right strain of willow in canada to make a bat?

Keep fishing Buzz , Canadian Willow is like gold dust in India and has been for the past 3/4 years. The major bat makers are soaking up the volume.

From what I can read on t'interweb, Canadian Willow is predominantly not Salix Alba Caerulea, and more generally is either Salix alba 'Vitellina-Tristis' or Salix Sepulcralis 'Chrysocoma' which apparently grow better in cold climates. These however are not your classical straight willow tree, but rather the weeping sort.

So I think the question as to can you provide someone with a bat made of canadian willow is a fair question. I think it would be interesting to see whether anyone could really identify the difference.

I'll raise canners bid to £31...

When I left my bat in the car during that cold winter 2 years ago, it put on weight which I presume was additional moisture.  It may require extra drying though as mine spent a while in the airing cupboard. Since Canada has some water,ie niagra falls and the great lakes for starters. I think we can tick that box as well :D

That's amazing, according to you only a couple of weeks ago, my bats which according to you are both Kashmir and Canadian only cost £50. Bargain!
