Ian Bell
« on: October 20, 2011, 08:50:03 AM »

Is he dead?

Because I still can't work out why Cook/Flower have kept the same team again after 2 hammerings in India. Bell is one of the most in form players in world cricket at the moment, a great player of spin (an area we are struggling in) and bloody brilliant in ODIs

Can someone explain why they are sticking with KP? I'm lost

We should be building the one day batting around Cook/Trott/Bell in my opinion....

To be blunt because he isn't "bloody brilliant" in ODI's. KP has more odi hundreds than the whole of the rest of the squad put together. Bell's ODI stats are comparitively rubbish. But I would pick him too.

As I said elsewhere, in my view it is Kieswetter who should make way - KP should open with Cook, Bell at 3, Trott at 4 and the rest below that. This obsession with a keeper opening is reached farcical levels.

OK - well maybe he's not bloody brilliant, but he is playing well at the moment and has been scoring runs.

Maybe it's just that I don't like KP anymore!

Sorry coach ;)

p.s. I also think that Ian Bell is Bloody Brilliant...

p.p.s. "Trescothick [on sky] is talking an enormous amount of sense about how to bat in ODI cricket, in comparison to some of the wishy-washy stuff the current batsmen come out with. "You've just got to look to score off of every ball, and then hit the boundaries only when you feel it is a low risk shot.""

I love Tresco - such a shame he went the way he did. Somerset may have stood a slightly better chance in the CL if he went to India.

I just don't understand how you can leave Bell out, I really don't

I concur, Bell is the best player of spin it the squad and would be ideal for us to score freely in the middle overs.

I know it's a little early in his career for this, but what's your opinion in Buttler keeping for the last 2 games. From what I've seen he's not the worst behind the stumps and we are crying out for a 'finisher'. With Collingwood retired and Morgan injured I can't see who in the current XI plays that role

I would also like to know why Prior doesn't even get a sniff in ODI etc?? He's class and probably the best keeper/bat in the world at the moment. Solid behind the stumps and can give it a thump.

It can be bemusing how the selectors go about building a one day squad, the shorter form of the game is how prior was initially thrust into the England squad. I'm amazed that Davies hasn't been given a prolonged run in the team, a genuine opener and great numbers in the best one day team in the country.

Another inexplicable thing. I think he should be playing too, but his record says not. Having said that he should bat about 5 or 6 in the order in ODI stuff not the top three and there are a large number of players looking at that role.

He did have a good season with Surrey didnt he...strike rate was pretty good during the games I was able to watch on Sky

Give me Prior over Bopara any day.

Spot on. I think having Keiswetter, Bopara and Pietersen in the same top 6 there are too many unknowns- all are hit and miss, Bell should be in for one of them, for reliability and quality, and Prior in for Bopara.

IMO Bell is the best player in the country

It's taken a few years to fulfill his potential bet he's getting there. It defies belief he cant get in our one day side

one thing england could do is drop keiswetter for bairstow and bell slots in opening the batting
with 2 new balls now it suits his strokeplay.

you have to pick your best players whatever format.

I have a feeling KP might retire from one day cricket at the end of this tour thou to preserve his test matches, similar to Straussy....

KP wont retire as it wil hit his back pocket - his ECB Contract will go  down to an incrimental one - so that will hurt him by about £100K per year.

FYI we had only 15 scoring shots in the first 10 overs. Aren't batsmen taught about rotating the strike and looking for two's any more? or is it all about smashing every ball for 4 or 6?
what was Tresco saying in the Sky commentary earlier... this batting thing, it isn't rocket science.

Couldn't agree more. That's a terrible stat.
