I am aware of the minimum dimensions for int'l test matches (for non-grandfathered grounds), but my question concerns "afternoon cricket". How small does it get? (I know people play in alleys, and anywhere, but I mean how small for an organized team?). I ask because this is a problem with the ad hoc venues used in the US. We usually play on an oval that is 127 yards on the long diameter (line running over both wickets) and 97 yards on the short diameter. Is that hopelessly small??

I guess that means 127 x 97 yards is inadequately small. I believe the suggested minimum is 140 x 130.

play on plenty of small grounds, one at a place called Ledsham is 107 * 84 yards.  Not ideal but it happens. My view is side boundaries should be 60 metres either side and long ones 70 metres as a minimum. The principle is that nobody should be able to mishit a six, it has to come somewhere near the middle to clear the boundary.

Smallest I've played on is about 80/90 long and 70 /80 wide which you can guess is a high scoring ground as the one boundary is the 30 yard circle and a great batting track

My home ground's straight hit is very short, only 55 metres. However the ground next to it is an absolute midget, with 35 metre square boundaries and max 45 metre straight boundaries. About 280 is par on that ground in any format haha!

It is short straight but not always 28m to one side - for the league games it is much longer as we play more in the middle of the square.  Playing Stapleton next season and that is tiny to each side....

Yeah picked the smallest part square. Stapleton is small but can't think of any all-round small grounds. Places like Rockhamton have bits that are shorter than others.

Pensee de l'escalier [unable to find accent, sorry]: You can't be from Essex and be a big deal---a bigger pond, or backwater is needed. Overkill perhaps.

Knowle and dorridge 3&4ths ground has a tiny straight boundary which must only be about 20 meters at most!
Nether whitacre also has tiny straight boundaries. A genuine edge off a drive almost carried to me at 3rd man there!

I made a rather discourteous reply that I have deleted. I made it at 0300 (long story up early for 17 hrs of journey, back now) thinking I was being very clever.  I was not at all mad, but I was trying to "take the piss", or whatever you call it---but in retrospect a really impolite and immature decision. I'm guessing no offense would be taken but I feel better deleting. I had all day to wish I could delete it, BUT no computer at hand. Anyway, my apologies and I thank everyone for the replies. It is so easy to make a post impulsively. I will think more carefully next time. BTW---Essex is my team and much of my blood.
