Team in all sorts, then lost the plot
« on: November 01, 2011, 01:30:04 PM »

Today at training I heard that one of our lower teams had the team they were playing on saturday in all sorts at 6/20 , then they kicked on and were 9/384 by the end of the days play. I felt bloody sorry for them as I know the captain and that would be bloody dissapointing, especially when his figures were 4/27. One player got 224 and another got 88.

Here is the scores from the paper - scroll down to Fifth grade and then University v Wests (1).

Anyone else have a story like this happen to them or another team at their club or have you done this to another team?

id be gutted. i guess its pretty easy to think your gonna roll them at 20/6 and take your foot off the gas a little. i guess its a case that the foot was taken off the gas and the bats had a good day. just unlucky i guess

I saw the score in the paper on sunday and thought they must have struggled all day, but when I heard that they had them at 6/20 I was shocked. That's cricket I suppose, you take your foot off and the other team will make you pay.

i must admit we have been on the receiving end a couple of times. i remember when i was about 14 we set 320+ to win in a 50 over game. they were 3 or 4 down pretty quickly. guess we thought it was in the bag. the number 5 scored 150 odd and they won on the last ball. cracking game but gutting to be on the wrong side. as langer said, thats cricket for you

Had a few instances of this:-

1. Playing top of the table and with 10 men we were 60-4. Lad at 5 scored 80 in about 10 overs, guy at 6 who hadn't scored a 50 in years, belted a ton and I chipped in with a cheeky 50. Highlight was seeing there faces when I dumped the leggy into the trees to bring up the 300 for 5. We had smacked 240-2 in 30 odd overs. Declared soon after out of pity and they came nowhere close.

2. Played in a t20 final. Opening bat for us hit the first ball of the game out of the ground, but we quickly collasped to 24-7 in 8 overs. From 27-7 off 10, we hit 84 in the last 10 to scramble 111 in 20. Oppo were 50-1 off 8 and fell away to 99-7 off 20. Totally mentally shot.

Point of both games is when you let it slip that badly you rarely recover. The team that gets away with it often lifts their game, while the team on the receiving end just subside. Moral, if any, is to finish strong. Just don't get yourself in a hole you can't dig yourself out of.
