Fancy giving it a go over the winter while im bored, i'm an absolute beginner so think i'd be best off with one that just needs finishing off?

Any thought on:

-Where to get it from
- What tools i would need
- Where to begin!

I believe you can get partmade clefts from matt at H4L - they are on the website.
You'd most likely need: A drawknife, a couple of planes (not sure exactly what type though.), some travishers (if you want concaving), a sander for final finishing.

I was also thinking of doing this to occupy my time over Christmas (apart from drinking). I want to use as little tools as possible whilst making an old school GM Purist shape. What is needed for this? (sorry to hijack the topic a little)

I managed to make a bat using only a saw (Yes, a saw) a plain and a sander. Turned out alright.

ebay is always a good one for tools. pick up some decent old tools for not alot that just need a good clean up and sharpen.

a decent sturdy bench and vice is a must. sharp tools are also a must.

id say you definately need to take your time. mark out what you want edge wise and middle wise. so easy to take too much off and be left with a matchstick. ive got a couple more ive made which ill be posting on here once finished. im no expert at making them but if i can help at all let me know

Definitely give it a go chaps, hard work but satisfying, I'm about to do my third bat and will probably order another part made from Hell4Leather shortly!

As has been said eBay is a great place for tools, I did my first bat with planes but I'd seriously recommend investing in a drawknife, it really makes life easier to remove lots of wood.

What would you ask for when ordering a part made? Would you get it pressed semi shaped and stringed? Or what?

they will more than likely come pressed, handled with the shoulders and toe cut
