Got a bat that I am oiling before applying a scuff sheet, and I was just wondering if I should:

Knock in then scuff sheet
OR
Scuff sheet then knock in

Personally I knock in without a scuff then apply afterwards. I have heard that applying the scuff before makes knocking in the bat harder to do.....

The purpose will be served by both; if You put the sheet after using the mallet for sometime it will at least ensure that the oil will be soaked in well enough so that you will not have any probs taking the sheet off after a lot of use.

I alway put the scuff sheet on after knocking in because trying to round off the edges with a bat that has a scuff sheet is hard and ruffles the sheet up.

It gets on my nerves when you get a bat that comes un-oiled, not knocked in and with a scuff sheet on. Because then you can't oil it or knock it in properly.

And there is this nice feeling about oiling and knocking in a new bat yourself. I don't like those which come 'pre-prepared' and you can oil only the back.

If it comes with a scuff sheet on they don't need oiling, only the areas open to air need oiling.

Why? I know oiling is mainly to lock moisture in, but I think somewhere it said it was to get the fibres to knit together as well.

What Tom is saying that those bats which come with the scuff sheet applied (GM,GN) etc are pre-prepared and oiled. You just need to oil the back.

Cheers guys, think I will knock in and then apply the scuff sheet after. This will also allow the scuff sheet to stick on better as the oil should be dry by then.

Erm, you should let the oil dry before you start knocking in...

Yeah--give it sometime so that the oil dries up and then start knocking it in. The scuff sheet will stick to the blade irrespective of when you apply it. But ensuring that the oil has soaked in properly will reduce the chances of hurting your grains when you decide to take the sheet off after a lot of use.
