Hiya,

Can anyone give some thoughts on helmets for WK's please.

I have seen these new Aero mask and didn't know if anyone had used them and what their thoughts were. I guess my only concern is that the natural instinct would be to turn your head if you thought you were going to get one in the face, and if you were quick enough (!) there wouldn't be much protection there?

Alternatively, I thought i saw somewhere that some manufactures were making WK specific helmets? is this correct and if so what's the difference and anyone had a go??

what about the Ayrtek helmets for WK??


I've got a GN helmet, but used a newer, but old Albion off a friend which seemed better.

I would recommend the Ayrtek. I used an ayrtek all last season and I had no problems with vision etc.

To be honest most are fine to keep in, i have kept in both an albion when i was younger and a masuri for the last 5  years and they have both been fine, and from what people have said the ayrteks are also good and can only see them being better due to being lighter

i never keep in a lid because i cant stand it when ball goes above ur head its harder to see.

and tbh only pussys keep in lids

there has been this debate on here before - to lid or not to lid, ive been forced to from a young age and it has  become natural, think i will keep wearing one most of my cricketing life

thats fair enough i just feel when keeping you need the best view possible not just for the ball but the fielders etc as well..
i had to ware once if i was stud up up till 18 but as soon as i was i took it off.

been hit a few times its not nice but still dont ware one

You have the same vision in a helmet when batting as when keeping so what's the difference? I've nearly always kept with a lid on when standing up. If you are up to the stumps against a medium pacer and the batsmen top edges a short ball you don't stand a chance! For the sake of a game I'd rather keep my good looks!

cant beat being hit in the temple and knocking ur self out when all your teams mates are laughing at you!.

few reason when your keeping and your crouched down i find the helmets dont let enough light in.

also if some one top edges it above ur head and ur looking up in sky its easier to see with out a helmet on as the peak restrictions ur view meaning u have to look right up to get a glimps of the ball.

i just hate having a lid on keeping

Agree with that point, but I just think the positives hugely outweigh the negatives, but at the end of the day it's a personal thing. I hope you have the number of a good dentist!

I'm not a wicket keeper, and never have been, so I'm not really sure what I'd use, but Masuri do a specialist lid for keepers, and we stock it, as you can see here:

Aside from the shortened peak, there's not much difference to their normal helmets.  We couldn't help but notice that the other specialist helmet manufacturers don't yet offer specific wicket keeping helmets, and Aero's is very expensive, so there's potentially a gap in the market here...

isnt there a difference in the back, slightly highe to allow air to the back on the heads too on the masuri.

Yes I thought it had a higher back, but I thought this was for a better fit, so that the helmet did not hit your back when crouching.

no idea mate, maybe both. i just remembered reading about removing bits that arent needed!

Set to be widely used on the the First Class scene and designed in conjuction with Paul Nixon of Leics CC. The Masuri keepers helmet has a strong carbon fibre reinforced construction and is cloth covered in Navy material. The raised back allows for greater freedom of movement within the wicket keeping stance and the shorter peak improves all round vision. The vented shell is light but strong and has an adjustable head band to acheive a tailored fit.
