nnnoooooo keep your stillness and simple technique - don't increase your movement!!
Just make sure your guard is in the right place!

by doing "a  slight shuffle with your backfoot slightly across to the middle stump " you run the risk of opening yourself up making it harder to get your foot across to the pitch of the ball.

your movement should be led by your head and eyes, not your feet, which is why I push this mantra.

sorry to dissagree!!

keep your technique as simple as possible - start in the right place then there is less that can go wrong.

I should have used the word trigger movement instead of shuffle. Personally for me it helps a small trigger movement of my back leg towards the middle stump while facing fast bowling.

May be this video is a better explanation of what I wanted to say :

trigger/shuffle - the meaning is the same - it wont help in this case - it will over complicated a simple (and decent) technique

how are you out most often to fast bowling doing this?

I am listening :)

In recent times I have got this tendency to cut / glide the ball too close to the off stump, lead to my downfall.

I do this all the time (and I don't trigger, I just can't bat very well), always out cutting/gliding balls that are too full and too straight.

is the because you aren't confident working the ball off the front foot for singles and looking to force the pace?

a trigger to an open stance - so back and across usually leads to a few ct keeper or bowled due to the alignment being wrong and not being able to get into line so easily

a back and across plus a front foot movement usually leads to lbw's as you have moved too far across your crease and can't play the line of the ball so well - or it leads to ct mid on. I have had a load of trouble with this in the past, as has Canners.

Pretty hard to give a reason to be honest, I'm much stronger through the offside on the front foot than anywhere else, but my bowling's always taken me to such a level above my batting that I've never really batted outside the bottom 3 and thought about thinks like that before. Now I'm in Norway and the standards a lot lower I really want to work on my batting this winter and start scoring some runs.

For me it happens when I get overly aggressive. My two strong shots are either reach to the pitch of the ball and loft it straight over the bowler's head or if it is dropped short, cut/late cut/ glide/ pull. If I commit myself stepping out and not able to reach the ball, instead of going defensive, I try to glide the ball ( Seemingly I am misjudging the line of the ball as I am trying to glide a ball from the stumps which I should play with a straight bat.)
