GM 808+ Question - Updated with Review of 808+
« on: January 28, 2012, 05:50:41 PM »

Here's one for the experts. I was trying a GM Icon 808+ that weighed 2'11, I then saw a GM Icon 2'11 (I think it was an 909/Original) and compared the two. Same weight and profile but the 808+ was much thicker, bigger bat edge/toe/spine. Why is the 808+ thicker for a given weight? The shop assistant didn't and looked pretty confused!

The + is supposed to be a different machine path on the cnc and normally refers to a shape, ie flare and flare+. The 808 simply refers to the grading. If the + weighs the same as the normal one then it was a lucky cleft.

So what you saw were an 808 icon and icon+ rather than an 808+ and an 808.

Would say that the 808+ was made from a lighter cleft. As all GM bats are made to the same size and the final weight is determined by the density of the cleft.

my thoughts were that either it was a much lighter cleft - that said it seemed to be as big as GM+ I've seen previously. Or the 808+ weight was incorrect, all weights in Romida are on the top of the handle which is very helpful. However, the pickup didn't feel that far off a 2'11 imho. Though I'm a 2'9 man, I'll shift 1-2oz for a good pickup but the £165 price tag soon stopped any thoughts of buying it.

my thoughts are that if you find a gm + in 808 or 909 at 2.10 or less you think very seriously about investing!
get that mallet out!

What is also noticeable is that even with the gm ready to play they can still be relatively soft, so need a chunk of knocking in.

Leading Edge Cricket have a 707+ for £131.99

I doubled checked the 808+ weight with Romida. Very speedy response:-

I have just spoken to our Brighouse store who have weighed the bat, it is the top end of 2lb 11oz as Gunn and Moore weigh them without the antiscuff and toeguards on, this does add a little to the final weights but yes it is around the weight the label says. The G&M + bats are made to have a good/lighter pick up but with the advantage of more wood in the bat.

Uknsaunders. I got a 909 icon+ a few weeks ago and it was worth the money mate. I am also the same and like my bats 2.8/2.9 but I thought I would take a risk with the Icon+ and it was a great decision. As they say it really does have a light pick up and I think my bat is 2.13 but it felt at least 2.10/2.11. Used the bat for the first time in a net the other day and it was pure awesomeness! When it comes out the middle it feels superb. When it comes out the middle the noise is fantastic and the balls just seemed to be flying over the bowlers head most of the session, as I was having so much fun with it!

If you want to know more about it ask mate, But I really do recommend getting the + and going for that 2 or 3 oz heavier.

And just to add my two cents worth: my friend had a Flare + 404---cheap, bleached and with 5 grains; but even that went like a train and many sixes were hit with it. Weighed just under 2.12 but had a great pick up and swing. These are genuine good bats, specially if you find one which is a little light.

and that's what I did. By luck I have found a 2'10.6 GM 808+, which is sitting in my study. 35mm edges - 55mm spine and 7 evenly spaced grains. Possibly could've passed for a G1.
