My first Batmaking attempt - now finished
« on: February 01, 2012, 09:27:11 PM »

Got a Performance cleft from Gary @Redback for £65, and had a go at bat making. It's obviously only half done yet, it weighs 3lb at the mo with a target weight of 2lb 12oz. I am gonna Laver the splice up, and sticker it up as a Ninja. Low middle with original spine height retained, it's unbelievably responsive off the mallet. The only thing I could do with advice on is how to make it less square, kind of to round off the middle.

looks good mate. id say a little weight of the toe maybe as it looks quite chunky. cleft looks lovely. why is it a performance cleft. what does that mean?

reasonably easy to round of the middle a little. id take a draw knife or spokeshave and gently round it off then angle the blade following the side profile(edge to spine) to get the spine point back. hope that makes sense

Performance is Gary's lowest grade, £115 on the website. No idea why this is a lower grade cleft, it's lovely!

I am reluctant to touch the spine as I don't want to lose it! I've concaved it, so I should be able to concave the spine back (hopefully)

yeah just apply very little pressure. spokeshave is probably best unless your confident with a drawknife. let the blade glide of the wood. should be fine. easy to concave it back to the spine. you only want to take off a few mm to get it rounder.

id be happy with that as a grade 1 lol.

No end to your talents mate, bat making and stickers. Are you going to sticker it up with the ninja stickers?

Why not leave it as it is. Captain Caveman springs to mind!

A hefty chunk of wood indeed, lovely grains!!

For some reason this thread just gave me a sticker idea, I don't think it's been done.

Down the spine of the bat, the DNA spiral (insert scientific name here). It looks good in my head :D

Hello all, can I just say this ISN'T a performance cleft!!! I was a bit rushed by the courier coming very early, so just had to send the first cleft to hand.  Joe got very lucky, simple as that.  Please don't expect to order a performance cleft and get one like this because you will be very disappointed.  Just thought I'd post this as I've had loads of people asking for performance clefts!  Cheers Gary
