We've had balance and pick up the other night. whats the difference between hand crafted and hand made??

Hand made is from scratch is my book I.e raw cleft.....crafted is finishing from apart made per-shaped via CNC

Good question imo. I had this out with RP ages ago as I didn't know. Crafted is from a part shaped/pre shaped profile etc and handmade is straight from a cleft. Lots of makers craft now for time and productivity but I know a few that still get down to handmaking and with some customers that's what needs to be done. It's great to see to be honest.

Not really mate most top bats are now. Most of the pre shaped I see at RPs aren't finished or anything. There's still lots of wood to remove and play around with. my custom is the best bat I've ever had and that was 'crafted' from a pre shaped cleft. It still took over 2 hours to get right though. Plenty of wood was removed and the profile altered a lot.

Going by that then even Lavers are handcrafted while Newbery are handmades

I would say so.

We all know Newbery bats aren't really hand made, even GM bats say ''Hand made in England''

Gray Nicolls bats too say Hand Crafted same goes for Puma 6000 model

Aren't Newbery crafted as well??? Im pretty sure there's a cnc that does the pre shaping there. As there is at many batmakers. It's just one of those bent subjects which is why I like it. Any podshaver still uses the skills and talent they have developed over years of doing the job. Just because machinery aids the process that doesn't mean the products aren't still made and finished by hand

I think we read into it too much.

I bet there are some full bat makers who say handcrafted, when they are in fact what us bat geeks would refer to as handmade. Charlie French is one example. He makes from raw clefts, but advertises his bats as handcrafted.

Yeah thought so lol. Yeah been to see CF and he does 'make' as we might say. Crafted is still a fine word to use though. Either way we know who makes and who doesn't, to a.degree I guess what the bat creation fellas put on their willow is entirely their choice

If you use a band saw to remove wood from the cleft is it still handcrafted?

guess your hand is still holding the cleft through a band saw, as opposed to being put in a CNC machine and press a button ... ding ..  out comes a bat , which admitedly still needs hand finishing .. Seems maufacturers are stretching the realms of the english language.  Perhaps to Julian and Charlie handcrafted means they handle the wood from start to finish and therefore is trully handmade?? and handmade really just means hand finished.  Odd question to answer, does TK still hand press each cleft individually before he shoves them in the CNC?
