Mitten Gloves a la Tony Grieg

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on mitten gloves? Tony Grieg used to wear the St Peter ones, and I personally like them and would love to see other peoples thoughts on them. Look here at 3:22

it looks like each finger has its own bit like a glove but the padding is where it looks like a mit.

Not sure I like the design. Can't imagine it being as flexible as modern gloves

Those Aero gloves are the closest i've seen to them. What a take from Marsh by the way!

They first appeared in 75, which is the year of the Greig picture, and the first year of the original GN Scoop. (I think the picture was taken at the World Cup Semi Final at Leeds, the bowler is Gary Gilmour) As Greig became England captain later that year, the gloves got a lot of publicity. They lasted until about 79 / 80 when SP went bust. Other players to use them included Ian Botham, Rodney Marsh and Clive Lloyd.

The design had individual fingers but a one piece back. Other manufacturers had similar designs but had to make sure that their design did not infringe SP's registered design. The people who had similar designs were Duncan Fearnley, Morrants and Stuart Surridge. GM had a one piece back design, but in was shaped to have separate fingers.

In 1980, the SP gloves sold for £13 for the top of the range leather palmed version.

Gray nichols used to make a pair with pimples all over them. Back in the 90's. Anyone know what they were called.

Ah memories of the summer of 75, 15 years old playing cricket everyday of the 6 weeks holiday, wearing old spiked cricket gloves covered in foam with SP drawn on em. We won every match that year, once scored 900 not out, there again it was my ball.
Also remember home made gloves didn't last long but we looked the muts nuts with our collars turned up ala Greigy. It was the only time we wore our school cap. lol

The aero gloves are more sophisticated, with their "airflow system" and also the padding has separate finger shapes.

The SP gloves were the creme de la creme back in the late 1970's, early 1980's.

The ones in that pic must be an early model, because the later ones only had the SP logo in the middle.

They used to cost circa $45AUSD back in 1981/82.

To put that into context, gloves off onlinestockist are the same price today! So they were damned expensive!

They were also the lightest gloves of their day along with the SP pads which were light for that time.

Not really! They were a development of the mitten idea. SS had their own version of the mitten glove, it was refered to an "armadillo" design. THe problem with the mitten design was that it didn't really allow independent finger movement.
