Newbery B52 Bomber XL
« on: February 18, 2012, 12:14:52 PM »

Hello everyone

Seriously thinking of buying one of these, 3lb weight SPS model. For a bit of slogging.
Has anyone any experience of a B52 XL to share please?

Got two - lovely bats they are too.  Plenty of wood, as you'd expect, and it takes a bit of thought to get the grip set up right so as to balance them in your hands (they have quite thin handles for my liking) but, well, the first has made nearly three thousand runs and post refurb looks lovely!

Thank you, hoping to handle some heavy bats in a shop tomorrow to help with the decision making.

I had B52 Bomber, not the XL version but was a heavy bat, if you can use them the bat itself was awesome, i can only imagine what XL would look/perform like.

I did not like the thin oval handle, tried 2 grips and other things but just did not work for me, but i am sure someone else could use them, no doubt abt the quality of the bats.

I've had plenty of bats but this one I have as my match bat. Serious middle even off the toe you can clear boundaries. I just used 1 1/2 grips and it was fine! Highly recommend this bat!

I am also considering the Kookaburra 2012 range Biggest Kahuna which are about £100 less, which is meaningful when this would not be my main bat. I visited Romida in Leatherhead (great shop) yesterday who were very helpful and have some Kookaburra stock due soon.
The other e-tailer with the XL SPS would neither post photos of the bat (they had used someone else's photos) nor offer any discount for an immediate but blind purchase hence I did not proceed.
According to Romida the 3lb ish bats tend to stay in stock longer so no rush.

not sure why an online retailer would offer a discount for buying blind?

Some sellers will email or post photos of the bats for sale.
I was quite willing to pay full price if I could see photos of the bat and I was happy with it.

Also considered other bats made in heavier weights such as Kookaburra's Biggest Kahuna and the Gray-Nicolls Extreme range. I had viewed the Newbery range in Morrant, however, the 3lb B52 XL in stock, lovely bat as it was, did not have as big a profile as my Kahuna 800s, which are each at least two ounces lighter.

I have finally settled on a find at Warsop Stebbing, a Scimitar Bow weighing in at 3lb 6oz.

Its just about manageable and I don't usually face anything too fast or bouncy tracks
Won't use it often either ; its there as an option though
