It would appear that Ponting's ODI career is over, after he was dropped from the team after several disappointing scores. Still, he has been a great player for many years and it will be hard to fill his place, but good to see that Forrest is still in the team.

A true ledend. He will be missed  but I'm sure the aussie will find somebody to bat in his position but replace him I don't think so some how.

I hope this is not end to his ODI career, it will be extremely sad day if that is case.

He is just a wonderful player, certainly a legend of the game and would say one of the best if not THE best number three batsman in ODIs (talking about ODI's here as it is ODI thread).

Very sad, a true champion, I think ODI'S aren't his go anymore, but we've seen what a tough competitor he is with his recent rejuvenation of form in the test arena. Certainly the best #3 of all time.

disliked by many english cricket fans but a truly great modern day player
he's hung on for longer than some aussie ex -captains as well

I think Ponting was lucky to last so long. He was in the same boat as Dravid. Both woefully out of form, but had one bumper series(Ponting vs India and Dravid vs England) but all it did was mask their shortcomings.

In Ponting's case, the ODI series that broke the horses back and Dravid the Tests in Australia.

However great a player is, they should know when their time is up. Players like Ponting, Dravid, Tendulkar should call it quits.

Ponting's just got a ton and double ton in his last test series. Still good enough, as with Sachin, class is permanent and still has plenty to offer the Indian team.

Tendulkar is 39 and India's next 4 series are all in Asia. They need to blood the Rahanes, Sharmas etc
