Matthew Wade
« on: March 06, 2012, 08:57:43 AM »

his introduction into the one day squad has been a good one , hasnt fully paid off but hes proven that he can bat and that his good behind the stumps.

Does anyone notice how in the final overs he keeps with one glove on so the batsman cant run any singles if they miss it, pretty smart :P

saw that the other day. good idea. better have good hands if he has to dive to his right though. Good to see someone different behind the stumps. Haddin should have gone long ago.

He is awful behind the stumps! If you watch some of the replays, you can see that he has awful body height and is not nearly as good as Haddin on his feet. Great batsman though!

He doesn't look a great keeper to me.
Just a younger version of Haddin really, which I suppose is preferrable...

Unlike Haddins numerous dropped catches in his last few games...shocking

Has taken some nice catches up to the stumps and is quite nimble down leg side.

Haddin has lost it

The catch he dropped wasn't a simle easy one, the ball really took off Kulasekara's bat who was swinging hard and he slashed at it, and it just got to Wade quicker than he thought it would. Only mistake he has made so far.

My view is that there is no point in keeping an older bloke in Haddin in the team if he is going to drop catches and not scores runs, then they may as well give the job to a younger keeper (Wade the front runner obviously) and try and groom them for the back to back ashes series coming up.

Wade's First Class keeping record is better than Paine's, with 50 more dismissals in the same amount of games (50 games to Wade, 46 to Paine). Also, Wade is 3 years younger than Paine, and doesn't have a history of injury problems, which is why Wade has already played a few more games then Paine has, despite being 3 years younger.

Another thing is Wade's favour is that his batting record is better than Paine's. Has scored more runs and in less innings - Wade 2490 in 74 innings compared to Paine 2467 in 84, and his average is almost 10 better - Wade 40.16 compared to Paine 31.62

To me, it is easier to make big improvements on the keeping side, then it is to make those big improvements on the batting side. Just look at Prior, he was criticized for being batsmen who could keep, but he really worked on his keeping and now he would be the best keeper/batsmen in the world. I didn't see Prior when he was struggling, but to me, Wade isn't bad at all.

Langer

Wade has played the majority of his F/C and List A cricket on a pretty flat pitch at the MCG.

Paine has played the majority of his in a rather spicy Hobart pitch.

Also remember Paine started his career as a pure batsman, opening. So his stats ate likely to be a little worst off

Paine is easily the better keeper and he is a more solid batsman for me.

Paine is easily the better keeper and he is a more solid batsman for me.

Being a pure opening batsmen should have aided his runs, but it didn't.

Also, with the MCG and Hobart differences, then Paine should be at an advantage when he goes to other grounds and Wade should struggle. It's kind of like India, they play on flat tracks and dominate at home, but then they go to England or Australia, and they really struggle with the movement and bounce.

I have no doubt in my mind that if Paine had been fit during the summer, he would have deffinately replaced Haddin, I'm 100% sure on that. Paine has been injured for a while, and he now has a history of breaking fingers and being out for a long time. Wade is young, injury free, has a better batting and keeping record - Clear choice for mine.

This is all my own opinion though, obviously others will differ.

I wouldn't say opening on a fiery pitch would mean you average more.

But as you said each to their own. I've all ways been a huge fan of Paine and hope he gets his career back on track.
