Clefts
« on: March 07, 2012, 12:11:29 PM »

Hello my name is Derek, and I'm actually from the States but I'm also an avid cricket player from my time in Australia. I've been wood working for years and already have all the tools and such required for making ones own cricket bat. However, I simply can't seem any clefts. I found one on Hell4Leather's website but that's it. I was assuming you guys would know the most about where to get clefts and would be really excited to find some others. It took me quite a bit of searching just to find that one.

Thanks :)

Hi Derek,

Agreed with Simmy plus try the following link as well. It is for J.S.Wright & Sons Ltd and they supply clefts to most of the manufacturers...

http://www.cricketbatwillow.com (check the products for sale section)

If I am correct there is a minimun quantity on order. Speak to someone there Telephone: +44 (0)1245 361639
or email them on  jsw@cricketbatwillow.com.

Get it from anyone who can give you a best deal. Chances are that you will get a good deal from the people mentioned by Simmy but there is no harm in trying all options.

Hope this information helps mate and all the best  :D

Beachy has a good point. Definitely worth a look, says they can supply in any number to any part of the world. The student pack looks good value for £68

the clefts from j.s.wrights are no good unless you have access to a press...
welcome to the forum always great to have new members who want to make a bat or 5, as the guys have said you probably need to get hold of some part made bats to start with...

Thanks for the tips guys!

Yeah I would be looking for part mades, I certainly don't have a way to press them but the handling and shaping would be no problem. I think the handling part would be fun so if it didn't have a handle that would be even better. I do have all the tools for shaping though, plenty of draw knives, spokeshaves, hand planes, and everything for sanding.

I had found the H4L one but I was looking to see if there were any other alternatives. The Peplow sounds about my speed as I don't think I'd want to use the highest quality cleft for my first bat for obvious reasons. You wouldn't happen to have a link to their website or something because I'm having a real hard time finding their website. Maybe they don't have one?

Thanks again for all your help :)
