To lid or Not to Lid
« on: March 08, 2012, 10:13:40 AM »

I started playing again after a long break last year and due to purchasing no gear I didn't get a helmet. Towards the end of the year I got myself one but never felt comfortable wearing it. Then it came to last nights nets, I started wearing it then I got a bit sick of it and took it off. Cue two balls later a bouncer at my face hits my gloves and has damaged the darts finger (I'm putting that excuse in now for when I get beat at darts tonight).

Which leaves me to the question to Lid or Not to Lid?

As always, it's stupid not to. Especially in hard concrete nets where people try and make it bounce.

I always wear a lid now, whatever level I am playing at. There is just as much likelihood of me top edging one into my mush as there is of getting pinned by a bouncer. What helmet did you buy yourself as a matter of interest?

The difference between a good, light helmet and a cheap, heavy one is enormous in terms of comfort, I had always struggled with a lid until I bought a Slaz Elite Pro (identical to a Masuri) now I barely notice it.

Depends what kind of bowling you face. I lid up most of the time because bowlers can put the odd bouncer/beamer in or you can top edge it. accidents happen.

i also find it helps in confidence. if you are worried about wearing one then your not going to be focused on what you have to do. Its always difficult adjusting to a lid, why did you get sick of it? uncomfortable? vision? weight?

Definitely lid.  It only takes one bad hit for you to be seriously injured for life... don't take the chances!  After wearing it for a while it will become second instinct

i hit myself in the grille last night whilst playing our spinner :( he bowled it wide so i went to hit it back to him rather than a proper shot and miscued it into my grille!! good job i had a lid on as would have been rather embarrassed otherwise with a split lip

Pretty much always wear one in nets, as even trundlers can get it up round your head.  Go match by match when outside.

I didn't used to wear a lid, then I got hit in the face, now I wear a lid.

The worst thing about getting hit is missing the rest of the game, which I had to do as I needed glueing. Annoying as I was sitting pretty on 30 odd not out at the time.

I always wear a lid. Gives me more confidence to play the sweep and pull shots

I never used to wear a lid. But now I wear one most of the time.
When using bowling machine I sometimes don't wear one if I know I'm having the balls pitched up and at less than 70mph. But if random balls then wear one nowadays, and if over 70mph!

In nets with bowlers I generally wear one these days too. The only time I don't is when I know the bowlers are not quick and I know that I am just practicing defensive shots only!

If nothing else, I am trying to get used to wearing them whatever the conditions!

I think we all see a bouncer easy enough, a lid allows us to play it better but the biggest factor for me is the top edge from a pull, not had one in the face but seen plenty and worse than a bouncer hitting the top of your head.

It’s GN, it just doesn’t feel right on the head and I have messed around with the grill a number of times and the vision just doesn’t seem right. I think I need to invest more time in finding the correct helmet and actually wearing it to find the correct feel.

If I point you in the direction of an Ayrtek and you buy one I get lunch from TomTek as commission...

But in reality there is no competition in my eyes for them, best by a country mile.
