Asian bats
« on: March 13, 2012, 07:44:40 PM »

Had a few people recently asking me to copy asian style bats. Although i have done this and they have been absolute beauties i have never and still cant come to love the shape. Is it me being a bit of an old fuddy duddy or do alot more people than i think prefer a more traditional style bat

The above comment is a bit perplexing; it seems that the bats you have churned out copying the Asian bats are beauties while the original ones are rubbish being produced in the 'back street'.

no not at all i wouldnt rubbish anyones bats at all as i know what goes into them all i meant to say was over the last 10 years or so since i stopped playing asian bats seem to have become the prefered shape. Is this because they have lots of wood in them, the shape or in general terms they can get shipped over here for incredibly low prices. One of my playing collegues used to get hand made newbury bats in a traditional shape that were huge and were awesome. What has changed and why. I am asking as it may be a case that i bring out a shape that can entwine the best parts of both shapes.

OK--  makes sense  :)

I think a hybrid shape will definitely have its takers. However, outside of this kind of a forum, people nowadays are still obsessed with edge sizes. In here, however, the GM Purist is still being idolized. Something in between will definitely cater to both the worlds.

Will see how we keep going with the Supreme for now as although it has a different profile the edges are big but not oversized. The good thing though is they can be oversized if requested.

The Supreme looks really nice and I would not worry too much about increasing the edge size unnecessarily but that is my two cents. It is great that you are doing a bespoke option which can then take care of different requests. Try uploading more pictures of your bats when you get the time; this forum is full of lunatics who simply cannot say no to good bats  :D

Well my 2 cents worth is that Asian bats are not all bad...I love BAS and SS and will love it regardless of how many quality english handmade bats I own (that is just me). I dont generally think that thicker the edge better as balance is everything for me when I use my stick. A well balanced quality willow with good ping in hands of a good skilled player will equally play well...As mentioned earlier people have this edge craze these days (saying that if I am given an thick edge bat for free from a sponsor I wont complain lol). :D..Paul your bats looks great mate and I am sure it goes well as well.. :) This is just a players words and you guys are the expert... :D

I agree, more pictures would be great. I actually like the supreme shape and it is on my 'to buy' list. I would also like to have a closer look at the handle shape they look unique.

I love that shape. But I am a big traditional bat profile man. Looking at that I'm wondering if laver still do it, might be forced to look. Although what I really want is SCAT series 1. I am not a fan of Asian bats at all. However I hear nothing but good things of BAS and CA

Rob Pack's wipeout shape is very similar to that Laver.

Paul, I think the main gist would be that people on here are getting bored with the very concaved shapes that have populated the market over the last 5 years and are drifting back to the Purist / Mjolnir shapes.  Whether the rest of the market as a general will follow suit remians to be seen.  I had about 10 years away from the game and in 2009 i found that shapes when i came back had vastly changed from the mjolnirs i'd used before, and for a while Kookaburra Kahuna / SS Ton shapes i thought were brillliant, but to me they don't have the playablity of bats without concaving and i've never tried to bat with the edge of the bat.  Seems to me that something like Newbery's GT shape is proving a good sort of compromise and Millichamp's series 1 bats a more modern twist on an old shape.  So perhaps you are being a bit of an old fuddy-duddy but i don't think you're too far off the mark as to what your target market are after.  I personally would like to see more bats in the Screaming Cat series 1 shape, i think the GT may have too high a middle for most English players, though you might want to have a look at H4L's hattori shape as a traditional take on an Asian bat.  Of the Asian bats, i think the non concaved, but still quite big edged Tendulkar style BAS bats are a very good shape that offers a long middle but somehow the massively concaved shapes are starting to feel like holding a shovel instead of a bat.

I pretty much agree with all that Sherpa has said!

Because I like to have a big 'looking' bat I tend to ask for thin edges so that I can still have a high spine but without masses of concaving to keep it at a playable weight. The way I see it is that the weight I can save from the edges of the bat can be put into the spine of the bat where I believe I need it more! Of course, I'm not a batmaker so I don't know if it really makes any difference but I do know that I much prefer this shape, visually.

I had Dan at Chase knock me up a custom FLC along these lines just before Christmas http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=14835.75 which I think explains the way I think better than words!

Recently there does seem to be a move away from the big thick edges that have been prevalent in recent years, hopefully that will mean more models on the market for me to choose from and the possibility of not having to go custom made in the future!

very happy to give feedback Paul, if you need any photos of a particular shape drop me a pm, i've got most shapes covered in my ever expanding collection.  Would love to see what you can come up with.  How concaved are your supreme bats out of interest, from the photos they look a lot like Jim Laver's preferred profile, but they are very heavily concaved.  The magnums i remember (an AB was one of my first bats) had very little
