Getting basketball shoes spiked?
« on: March 17, 2012, 03:42:34 PM »

A team-mate of mine wants some bowling spike with ankle supports due to repeat injuries, but due to being £60+ normally I'm wondering if you could get some basketball shoes spiked up. I know it is not advisable to get trainers spiked for bowling but can it be that much different?

Maybe something like these with full spikes http://www.sportsdirect.com/nike-overplay-vi-mens-159075?colcode=15907530

Basketball shoes have flat bottom so I don't think they work well despite they have high cut preferable for bowlers

for that price, I would give it a go. you can try them in the indoor nets before you get them spiked to test them out.

I think Alan Mullally used to bowl in a pair of spiked up Nike Air Jordans if my memory serves me correctly.

Basketball shoes are as if not more effective than regular cricket spikes. All basketball shoes are designed to cope with body weight impact but also a turn through 360degrees. When training indoors I know a lot of high level coaches support the use of basketball shoes as opposed to regular trainers, so they should be suitable for spiking.

I've also been advised that the best level of protection through footwear for wicketkeepers is found in tennis shoes as they are designed to come with lateral movements.

Thanks for all the help guys, seems like this could be a cheaper alternative to £100+ Nikes

I have a set of Nike Basketball shoes that were spiked up the Fast Bowlers Union for Glenn Mcgrath, the shoe had the toe cut out but he used a new set for every test match.
