I've been asked to bat at number 5 on Saturday for my new club and it just made me think how weird it is that I have almost been perceived as a completely different player compared to my old club where I was used to batting at 8 at best! I don't think I'll be opening the bowling though, which is a shame, fingers crossed I will manage that by half way through the season. Can't wait, just got to hope the rain stays away!

Shambles of a game last night. Had a re-arranged 10x10 cup game (10 overs per side, everyone has to bowl, batsman have to retire when they reach 20runs and wides/no balls are 4 extras and no extra ball).

We only had 7 players against 11 and we made 147 after our 10 overs only losing 2 wickets with most batsmen making their full 20+. However we were winning as they were about 60 off 6 overs and then they nominated another bowler to bowl who bowled an awful over of wides. Then they decided to take a ruling (as we only had 6 bowlers) that they could take the overs that we didnt have players to bowl for 20runs per over. So we ended up losing as they took the last 3 overs for 60 default runs. Shocking sportsmanship as at least we turned up and gave them a game and then for that to happen was shocking.

We're supposed to be playing them again tonight in a format like T20, so hopefully we'll get revenge (if the rain keeps off). Was a decent game for myself though, opened the batting and made my 20 in 7 balls and then I bowled one over for 7 runs and 2 wickets.

shouldn't you have agreed the rules before you started?

The umpires didn't even know the rules to be honest. Mickey Mouse cup, but bit weird how they can choose both to nominate bowlers and then also take the 20runs/over.

Annoying, as we did very well considering we only had 7 players due to players commitments having to play 2 games in 2 days.

I'd have called them on that.

Actually, to be fair I wouldn't have entered a ten over a side cup to begin with!

Yeah I know, it's crap.

However we automatically get entered into it. As there aren't many teams to play Divisioned cricket in the evenings around our area so it makes the season last a bit longer.

It happens.

When you play at a club you acquire "baggage" and depending on your history it determines how clubs perceive you going forward. Clubs all have different strengths but a perfectly good number 5 could be a tail end charlie at another club if the batting depth is good and the players start is poor. Different captains also have different perceptions. I batted 8/9 as a bowler/batter in my younger years. One season a new captain viewed me as a decent batter, let me bat 6 and I scored 350 league runs @40, 1000 runs in the season. Following year a new captain didn't rate me as highly and I was back to 8/9. Few years later I captained the 3's and scored 750 runs @70 to prove a point.

My thoughts are if you can be honest and say you can bat a bit, change club or drop a team to prove the point.

i don't mean to be a judgemental s.o.b. but what on earth does he think he was doing? what an arrogant idiot to carry on like that. surely after he'd hit the opening bowler for 93 off his 10 he would have realised that the game was a farce. could he not have retired after 150, or 200, or even 250?!

honestly that makes me sick. i remember thinking an old guy at our club was a pr*ck for batting out a 40 over 100 in a friendly against an oppo team full of young kids. i retired at 50 that day ;)

agree with nsaunders, i'm actually a reasonable seam bowler but have always been posted as a wk/batsman as the club i play for is desperately short of wks. now i'm captain of the sunday team though, i'm gonna bowl as much as i like!

Yeah its really nice cause I know I can do it but I was at my last club for 11 years since I was 9 so I suppose I was pigeon holed as a bowler who can bat a little bit. But moving clubs to a higher standard too will give me a chance to challenge myself and hopefully I'll score some runs this year and prove a point!

I know David Taylor, big leftie. Holds the record for the most money paid to a non-first class cricketer lol. He's been everywhere - High Wycombe, Henley, Radlett. Big reputation as a hitter and the likes of Radlett were paying him serious money for some one day comp a few years ago.

These kind of records get broken when good batsman face rubbish bowling on small grounds. Ollie Hardacker's knock last season was in similar circumstances, albeit he has less of a reputation. Our guys played against him last season and he wasn't setting the world alight at the correct level.
