How do I make a round handle, oval?
« on: April 01, 2012, 03:54:15 PM »

Hi guys, just received a new bat, thanks Dad. Managed to get it at trade price as the old man's good friends with someone whose club use AZsport gear, based in Woking. The bat is designed for shorter players apparantly! The only difference I can see is the blade is maybe a cm shorter and the  handle a cm longer!
Anyway, I prefer (and am used to) oval handles. I remember seeing a topic on the forum on a diy method of altering the handle, can anyone help with this?

cheers,

Use the hosk method of cutting a grip in half length ways then in half vertically and sticking the bit left of back of handle then normal grip on top and round is now oval

The first cricket box was used in 1874.  The first cricket helmet was introduced in 1974. So, it took 100 years for men to twig that their brains were also worth protecting.

A batmaker could shave the handle into an oval shape

With Pakistani made bats there is not a big enough handle to shape, quick and easy way is too add medical tape in vertical strips to form an oval shape, costlier method is to have it rehandled, you may have to get this done at some point anyway as it seems to be an inherent weakness.

Saunders insulating tape method. Layer on strips to the bottom of the bat as so:-

Not forgetting to use shorter strips towards the handle:-

Keep adding until it feels right. It only takes 10-15 mins to get a similar shape to an oval handle:-

Just keep adding strips until it feels right and job done.

I normally use the tape technique and then wrap a couple of layers horizontally to stop any peeling.
