Alternatives to cricket shoes and spiking trainers

Just a bit of info for those that might like to be different.  I have spent ages trying to find a suitable pair of shoes for cricket, I needed lightweight, low-profile shoes and really struggled to find anything suitable or affordable (given that spiking up a pair of shoes adds £30 to the price).  I had a nice pair of new trainers but bottled it when it came to having them spiked.

I was talking to someone about this recently and they recommended trying Cross Country spikes, which are basically running shoes with spikes in.

I did some research and there are loads around, although most are lary colours.  I finally found a pair of Adidas Techstar in white/orange for only £20 at Bourne Sports.

These are ultra light, very comfy and being made for running on grass and mud should be perfect for all-round cricketing needs.  If you are at a loss look them up at the online sports stores like Sweatshop, Bournes etc., there are some great models from Adidas, Nike, Asics, Puma and having worn mine a few times I am really pleased with the choice.

You have to choose carefully as some only have a four spike sole unit but there is so much choice I can't believe no one has recommended it before...

Those? They're spikes for running on tracks, I wouldn't of thought they'd be suitable at all for cricket, no midfoot/heel cushioning your feet would be really uncomfortable after a day in the field.

If you are bowler then Javlin spikes work too...

abt 30 GBP here in Canada...

The running shoes just aren't cricket imo, weren't these sort of trialled by Umar Akmal and Gibbs a few years back in the 20/20's

These look like moulded running shoes.

i guess if you go for a middle/long distance spike there will be more cushioning

although the problem is that running spikes are designed for people to move in straight lines, so are unlikely to provide the right lateral support for cricket.

No, they're the new ones which are running spikes.  I got the old model which were cross-country specific.  They are the same as long-distance running spikes to an extent, they have ample heel support.

I you chose normal running spikes I agree they are not suitable as they have no heel support at all.  Anyway, it's just an idea and something for people to think about.

Nice idea, but just to play devils advocate, running and turning on the wicket, treading on your own instep or treading on a team mate or opponents foot, those running spikes a flippin sharp

Try American Football shoes, they have directional cleats and can be used for Rugby or Cricket....

Oh, I forgot about that, my village ground only has an artificial and so wore them in the outfield and got away bowling in them, trainers for batting.

The sole is similar to astro's, I'm sure they vary as some American Football pitches are artificial and so astro style is very popular there.

I have them but the ones i have you can't undo the spikes on them, they have similar for baseball as well but with plate type spike rather than a pointy one...good for running around when fielding but not bowling..

One key issue I can forsee with those is that if you get hit on the toe you literally have no protection.

Also those shoes that Hershelle Gibbs is wearing were just moulded football boots if I remember correctly.
