Laminate Bat, from 2 old bats
« on: April 10, 2012, 04:57:50 PM »

For a while, I have had 2 old bats lined up to stick together, I've marked them up and throught through how I would do it. But I never got round to it!

Well Ryan awesome effort gave me the motivation I needed : http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=15960.msg256724#msg256724.

Its still not finished, but its nearly there now, I have a 8 month old so have very little time, as I have a few spare seconds I'll try and use them to go though the process!!!

The 2 bats where an old GM something or other, that was thin and had a big crack up the toe, and a very old V100, which had a broken handle. I have not included the pictures of the circular saw inverted and held in a bench vice because I thought it might encourage reckless behaviour, I was a bit scare myself!

I used the saw to remove as much wood as I could, as evenly as I could, this included removing the face of the V100, which I would stick to the GM.

Following this the next step was to get the plane out - there was a LOT of planing to be done!!!

As you can see from the above, I'm well on the way, the GM had been cut down, and I've started to plane the surface down. You can see that towards the splice its a bit of a mess, the circular saw was not idea for this.

Below, you can see that I've worked hard to get the surface flat, it needed to be perfect, long ways and across ways, I gave up with the area near the splice, because I'd cocked it up, the the rest was getting there:

Same was needed for the other bat, you actually end up removing a lot of wood to get it flat...

Testing the 2 surfaces then finally gluing them, glue wise, more was more in this case!!!!

I used my special method for clamping the 2 bats in place...

More shortly....

Right this is what I ended up with, about 3.6lbs!

Shaping with a draw knife, it was a bit tricky, because both ends of the GM were "in the way" and I had to be careful not to remove any wood from it.

A bit more work and we're getting somthing like:

More work, and the basic shape is there. One issue is that the join is not that clear, so I mixed up a filler using PVA and saw dust and filled in the gaps:

I've cleared up the joins a bit - still needs work, but I have a shape, I took this down the nets to see how it went:

..... It was ok,........... the V100, devloped a crack, which should glue up ok, and and the pick up was not great. I have had it back in the workshop, and taken a bit more wood out of it, it has a much more "normal" profile now, and the pick up is much better, I will put some more images up when its finally done!

Haha I'm not sure anymore must be around somewhere but it's not a combination of body parts like this one more a combo of different bat shapes in one bat!
