knocking in a flat faced bat
« on: April 16, 2012, 08:52:46 AM »

just wanted to ask what experience people have of knocking in a flat faced bat, especially the vulnerable areas like  the toe and edges.

the lovely blank bat I bought has a flat face, as requested, but I want to ensure it is really well knocked in before I use it.

I have started rolling the edge slightly. I suppose I will just need to be patient with the mallet!

what do you guys think?

Only ever had one eally flat face bat - the two things I'd say are, yes, you need to make sure that the edges are well rolled and rounded off - but also, you need to be careful to make sure you support the vulnerable bits with tape or facing.

I roll with the mallet handle, then 45 degree bash with the mallet on the edges, then knock in as normal over the edges, face and toe.

I first hit the edges with mallet (lightly) and then roll it on bat-tub/counter top. After that I give one last knocking to harden the edges.

Once you are done knocking in, hammer edge is essential...

Hit the edges at 45º to round, them smash the toe and inner edge for 30 minus. Give the face a once over and fin.

Buzz: We have had a play with making a flat face bat. I have ended up using it to see how it plays. The edges appear more vulnerable; however I'm with Tim2000s on the anti-scuff.  We have found that flattening the face takes out about 2.5 ounces! We are keen now to see if it has any impact on performace or ware - what do you think? You can definitely get bigger profiles.

According to you then, my flat faced bat should be ready to go... It's had 1.5 hours belting, with 45 on edges/toe and 45 on "face"...

roll the edge of the very firmly bat over the edge of a hard smooth surface. this will harden the edge of the bat, without leaving a dent.

you can use the handle of your mallet too.

Just watched a Julian Millichamp video on bat care and he mentioned that knocking in the edges at 45 degrees could damage the bat so perhaps just rolling the edges and knocking in the face as near to the edge as possible is safer especially with a flat faced bat...
