Always want to do this myself, but couldn't face actually doing it. Its one thing knowing (but not seeing) whats in side, but slicing and dicing is the best way!

Don't quote me on this, but I think its just a mixture of fibers that is waste to many carpet, clothing manufactures that is put to good use.

I went to a carpet factory a few weeks ago and it resembles the waste product. But if it keeps my legs safe it can be anything!

What sort of materials are used in the really expensive pads such as the gm original D30s or the kookaburra Kahuna 1000 pads?

out of interest. do you know the weight of the pads prior to being operated on? Be interesting to see the difference in pad weight to protection/materials used

Not all pads are made this way, some wont have the cane or stuffing. Various ways of making them. I would say this is a traditional way with the cane. Some like Morrant pads, wont have cane.
