the answer is I wasn't getting to the pitch of the ball whilst trying to defend/drive a little on the up. It is good to know that the middle position on the bat suits my play though :)

I wouldn't want to use the ridge as an excuse, really. But there is a really big ridge on a length at the barn which makes this kind of thing a little ambitious and obviously it would be totally unlike Fattus to try and hit the edge at extreme speeds to cause as much chaos as possible. :o

Hmmm isn't that what I said?

Well I can reveal that due to expert feeding of the bowling machine he hit a lot out of the middle. However, when I decided that this became boring, and we moved on to the short stuff, he left an awful lot more!

He is annoyingly good at middling loads, but he can easily be lured into overconfidence and flashing wildly at good balls, hence the outside edges :)

Ohh, and I was swinging it MILES!

He, he - he slipped me one at over 70 in there and I nearly pooped my pants!

You'll note the use of the words 'annoyingly good'!

We found the ridge several times last night though - that's always fun!
