To Box or Not To Box ?
« on: May 15, 2012, 10:30:38 AM »

Hi Gents,

After many seasons of decide this I have now decided to not wear a box when keeping.

There are many reasons for this decision however I thought I would ask everyone else's opinion on wearing boxes when keeping.

My reasons for removing the box were-

1. Never really seemed to provide any protection - as when crouching the box lifts up so any ball that would be on target for the crown jewels would hit them plumb any way.

2. The box seems to trap between my thighs when crouching.

3. Annoying when moving around the stumps

4. As a keeper I expect my hands to protect my vitals body parts

and Finally and most importantly.

5. I have never been hit in the mentioned area (not even a close call)

Does any one else not keep with a box?

Regards
LQ

Well...
4 isnt a good shout as then you wouldnt wear one when batting,
5 also isnt a good call as most people havent been hit on the head or plums but its there in case

I wear a box, just because i dont find it restrictive, i forget i have it on, its a aero box so goes further around and protects during a crouch. So i see no reason why not to.

I always wear one for keeping although like you I cannot remember ever getting hit.
I don't find that wearing one hampers me at all so I will carry on wearing one. Having been hit with and without a box whilst batting I can safely say that whilst a box does not make things pain free it is definitely an improvement!
Also I think I would be tempting fate and would just worry about it if I stopped

Absolutely not worth the risk.

In a game last season, I was suffering from terrible box rub. It was a bank holiday weekend and between batting and keeping I had worn a box for about 200 overs in 3 days, so it was really sore!

I took my box out while keeping to some spin and medium pace, only to put it back in when our quick came back on. Three balls later the young batsman snicks off, it comes through at pace straight through my gloves and smacks me square in the baby maker. Never have I been so glad of my box!

Having been hospitalized from a ball straight into 'steve and the twins' I wear a box all the time.....shopping, mowing, swimming.....better safe than sorry...just get a box that fits properly!

Definitely worth wearing one, the one time I forgot to wear a box whilst batting I got hit where the box should have been. I can definitely confirm it was one of the least pleasent experiences I've had in a cricket game.

I'd keep without gloves before I kept without a box

If you have never been hit then you are overdue one right in the knackers....

When I kept a while back I never wore a box it never even occurred to me to wear one as the gloves are big enough surely

Bats are never big enough

I was tempted to try those foam hands for keeping but looked odd

I always wear a box. Sounds like you need one that fits better. I can recommend the Aero ones - best i've had and cheap.

On a side note - I have bottom edged a pull batting in the nets and my box snapped in half. Funny for 20 blokes. Torture for 1. I've still got it.
