Removing bat stickers?
« on: April 22, 2009, 12:43:12 PM »

Having heard good reviews on this forum regarding SS cricket bats I am tempted to invest in an SS Ton LE (probably from Asad [prices and service are exellent in my view] but if anyone would recommend anywhere else please don't hesitate). Inspired by players at this seasons IPL (Hayden, Bopara) I fancy taking the stickers off it leaving just the distinctive stamps on the edges and back of the bat.

Do any of you bat makers/refurbers/general enthusiasts know the best way to go about this without ruining the appearance/performance of the bat. As it will be a new blade what sort of marks would be left once the stickers are removed?

Any input is welcomed.
Cheers

BE very careful while taking the stickers off. Unlike most UK bat makers / brands the stickers used by Indian companies are made from a thicker material which requires extra strong / more adhesive to be used.

Take it off bit by bit very slowly as you may pealing off some wood (even if you pull the stickers off side to side)

You are sure to see remains of the stickers for a long time. However, I has a bit of a luck this time. I experimented a bit. Lightly sanded off the stickered area and then applied the Salix bat wax to the lighter colored area. Be care full not to wax near the splice - I stuck masking tape over the splice extending 0.5cm over the outter part of the "V".

Leave the bat wax to get absorbed and then using a soft cloth rub the area where the bat wax was applied till you get a smooth finish. If you still see the faint marks. Repeat the process.

use a fine quality sandpaper. I suggest a no. 320 to start with and then for the final finishing used a number 400 (use 3M ones, they are the best)

hope I have not confused you.

when i refurbed my bat i wanted to get rid of the stickermarks to put my new set ofstcikers other wise it would look a bit weird my advise was to put oil and eventually it would go but that would take ages. so nipped down to my nearest wilkos and got the lightest wood dye they had (can check the name for you) and gave a light coat and the sticker marks were gone you can see pics at http://www.custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=1050.60 page 5

cheers for the info guys, it does sound a bit tricky and everybody seems to have a different view. I'm tempted to just leave it as it is because the SS Tons I've just been shown do look very nice.

Although it would cost a bit (about £25) would a proffessional be able to do it (i.e. Richard at Gray Nicholls) and make it look like the stickers have never been there without significantly reducing the characteristics of the bat? I wouldn't want to lose the stamps either.
