ST Extreme - 2
« on: June 06, 2012, 08:33:54 PM »

Made another bat upon request for a big bat:

1. 40 mm edges
2. No concaving
3. Weight 3 lb dressed.

Pretty happy with the end result, the bat has a nice pickup and balance.

Would love to hear feedback!

looks great mate and some serious meat in the middle.

have you put a counter weight on the handle ........ does that work?

Is the front sticker different to the last one you posted on here?? i like this one a lot better

Hey mate love the bat shape i think these look great..if i may make a suggestion without offending you then i would suggest a little bit more time buffing/polishing the blade while finishing...looks great otherwise...

Thanks mate. The sticker is same, just that I add one protective covering additionally which is different this time.
I have provided the counter balance to improve the pick up.

Thanks Tushar!

I am working on improving my finishing skills. Another problem I have is vice is leaving marks on the side despite the cushion and I could'nt sand the sides too much as it would have reduced the width.

Not yet mate, surprisingly no one asked me to do that despite my Screaming cat being so popular here among all the clubs.

I think the finishing is ok on the bat.

I prefer this sort of natural look to an over buffed/waxed/polished bat, it seems that it takes the oil a bit better and once applied the bat looks no different.

I don't think counterbalancing works - ok it artificially enhances the pick up, but it does feel artificial. I remember Newbery trying it many years ago with one of their models and it wasn't a success.
I'm no expert, but I think a counterweight would add weight to the bat in an area that doesn't benefit shot making or add value to a stroke. I sometimes wonder if 'bat speed' is a bit of a misnomer and what is actually sought after is 'bat agility'?
This bat looks a belter though!

My opinion is counter balance is ok as long as the middle is long enough to counter the "COP" which will move up. The counter balance works pretty well in terms of pickup. All I did was to cut the extra long grip and pasted it in three layers on the top. Effectively the dead weight is still of the one grip.

Thanks. I think the Newbery had quite a weight at the top of the handle from memory, which is obviously different to the rubber adjustment which I would imagine gives a more subtle feel.

Thinking back I think the Newbery bat might have been a Merlin, and it felt as though it had some metal inserted at the top of the handle. Not sure if this would be legal now. However, that did get me thinking, and an insert of lignum vitae wood at the top of the handle would certainly add weight there and probably be legal too.
